My std 2.8 never overheated EVER, infact I can only remember one occasion I saw the needle move to close to the middle of the heat gauge on the dash, that was a very hot day and I was hammering it up a hil at 80ish with a set of ladders on the roof 2 people up and all my tools in the boot.
I`d be more inclined to back flush your cooling system change the rubber pipes around and stick a new STD rad in. If you wanna change rads, you can use a 3L rad with the header tank or get yours recored. The BMW Ali rad wont swap into yours that easy as the pipe work is the wrong way around on the cologne.

Sounds very much like your rad is at fault.

I had overheating on my pinto, swapped the rad for a new one and all was well.

The 3.0 rad has the inlet and outlet on the wrong side for a cologne so wont be an easy fit.

Best thing to do is,
Back flush the cooling system
Make sure the hoses are clear and replace if needed
Back flush and flush the rad out with the garden hose until it runs clear. If the fins are all mashed up or missing then you will need a new one as the cooling efficiency will be reduced.

If the radiator flush doesn't help with the temp the replace.

While doing all this it might be worth replacing the thermostat to ensure the system is working as it should

Back to your orriginal question, a working radiator which isn`t on its last legs is your best bet. I`d stick a standard rad in.

I can backup the previous comments.

Despite people warning me, my 2.8i never overheats, especially in the current weather while sitting in traffic.

The best rad to replace it with is another 2.8i rad.

Totally agree, my has temp gauge has never got near the halfway mark. Dont waste money, sounds like you have other problem that needs sorting.
