type 9 gear oil change?

Post by spud20s »

hi. anyone know how to drain a type 9 box. can't see a drain plug at all. I was thinking of take the speedo out and try drain from there? or is there somewhere else to do it?
thanks spud20s.

There isn't a drain plug. Easiest way to get the oil out is to get it sucked out by a vacuum pump.

I've done the prop out method multiple times. An awful lot of unbolting to do though.

I had the front up on ramps to gain access and also it allowed it to drain. I left it over night and came out to find my tub full of water with a skim of oil. Type 9's let water in apparently.

Best of luck.

Either method is good.

Got a hand operated vacuum from tool station for about £20, does the job and is simple to use and saves alot of unbolting.

Also used it to empty the brake fluid when changing the MC and can be used for the Diff.

:agree: Easiest (& cleanest!!) by far. Got same thing from ebay, really useful.
