External Door handles for MOT - ideas please

Post by bendeneo »

Hi everyone,

Its been ages since I was last on here as I havent been able to do anything with my capri.... and finally I have had some people get to work on it...... so if it passes MOT next friday then I am a happy man, and I can start making it more 'finished'.

My current problem is to with the door handles..... it has none.... because the previous 'owner' took them off and didn't put a mechanism for opening the doors, so I put the requisite motors in and can open them off the key fob.

BUT there does need to be an external way of opening the doors for MOT, and the mechanics are thinking that whilst we decide on what we want to do on a permanent basis, for the MOT they will put some form of wire based contraption.

SO my question is that in advance of that, perhaps some of you guys have some better ideas?

I do have a couple of buttons that could go under the wing mirrors I guess? But any interesting ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Ben

Had a TVR that had the handles removed. Simple solution was to fit a push switch under the wing mirror as you have already suggested. This is the only fix for this really. :|

Thanks mate, yeah probably......

Mind you, as I am not too fussed about the doors being completely shaved and smooth, I might think about putting a chrome push button on the door, just about where you would expect the handles to be..... that might stand out nicely against the black of the door......

I also quite like the idea of someone being readily able to see how to get the door open if something is wrong (touch wood)...... hiding under the wing mirror is cool I guess, but a bit silly in an emergency.....

What do people think to that? Perhaps I should try and photoshop the car to see if I like the idea first!

90% of people who have tried to open my door have failed first time..... everyone seems to want to pull it out rather than up...... so if you're thinking of an emergency then original handles ain't much good...... You could go all james bond and put a pressure switch under the rear quarter so you could just bump it like the fonz to open lol

You dont need external handles

Your vehicle has a specialist modification, providing it can be opened byt he means designed i.e. your remote its acceptable

Tell your tester to check the manual again  failing that bring it here and i'll test it!

I`m sure that`s true but it still seems daft; what if you have an accident & passers by/emerdency services can`t get the door open? The button on the door sounds like a good idea personally.

OK.. so if you take the window glass out and you have access to the interior and hence the inside handle... is that illegal?

This door handle law has done my head in or years "must be a mechanical means of opening all doors from outside the car" and what do 99% of modern cars do now..... Lock you in when you pull away. Two logics defeating each other.

It seems sensible to be thinking about the what ifs of the mod, but if it comes down to it we can get your door off *cough* sorry open pretty quickly. I'm a firefighter and we practice that because side impacts can tend to stop the door opening anyway.
