Creaking from the rear

Post by rich_jc »

I get a weird creaking nosie from the rear of the car when travelling at slow speed. Almost like a constant quiet knock, but definately noticable.

Not overly worried, it has done it for a long time. I think I am just noticing it more, but anyone got any ideas? I had the wheel off Saturday and could not see anything loose or awry.

Are the prop shaft mounting and flange bolts properly tight?

Not so much a consistent quiet knock as a rattle, but when I pull off and the engine's cold, letting the revs drop enough for the car to labour a bit often causes a slight rattle from the back of mine... in my case it's just that the exhaust or one of its mountings just makes a tiny bit of contact with the bodywork somewhere along its convoluted route across the underside of the car... Usually fine once it's warm though, which I guess is things expanding etc. If you've changed your exhaust or been over a load of speed bumps recently you could try tapping your exhaust at various points with a rubber mallet to see if it's that?

Hmm, it is an odd one. It can get quite loud on bumbs, which makes me think it is suspension related. Again, like my front knock, I wonder if the shock could be suspect? I can seem to replicate the noise by bouncing the car though.

I have tightened the x-frame up a tad as well as thought this may be suspect.

Check all the exhaust mounting rubbers. One of mine snapped and its been doing exactly what you say. The metal hook taps and knocks against the underside of the car. And creaks too.

I'm with you there, worth checking the exhaust / tyre / leaf spring clearance..

I have had something like this on my Shogun I checked loads of stuff
Bushes, springs, Bearings, brakes shoes discs Etc
In the End it has turned out to be the Rear UJ.
Noise Travels I had a Fault on a Hilux Sounded like the Engine Crank had gone Yet it turned out to be the Rear axle.

Update:

I'm yet to confirm fully, but I'm 90% sure it is the x-frame u bolt fouling on the rear arb. I remember having clearance issues when I fitted it, even had to swap the 2.8 bar for a 4pot one. Makes sense why it got worse when I tightened everything.

I guess I can elongate the holes in the x-frame plate and move the u bolts along a few mm.

Bloody hell, I've just used search to find this problem, then realised I asked the same question 2 years ago! Really annoying me now, x frame to come off and I'll report back.
