Young person insurance...

Post by Adlen85 »

Looking to buy my first Capri at 17, haven't passed my test yet but I've found one that's perfect for me for sale so I'm thinking of buying a bit earlier than planned.

Since my dad would be driving it as much as me, if not more, it's going to be in his name, I've been getting quotes for £2,000 off KwikFit up until this week when they've gone to £3k! Although £2,000 sounds a lot, it's £2,500 less than a 1L Polo which is just f**ked up!

Direct Line wouldn't quote me, and getting a call from Adrian Flux tomorow morning, but is there anyone else I should try directly? Who've you had good experiences with (especially young people)?

Thanks in advance!

insureyourmotor gave me a quote for £1800 with ncb when i first started driving last year on a 1.6 laser

classic insurance is a good idea for cheap insurance but you may find it hard getting insurance on classic being young, also try Coverbox they would put a tracker in your capri and if it got stolen you would phone the police and they would recover the car, also insurance is cheap as chips its who im going with Now lol i had to think then :D they charged £1100 and £70 a month so i couldent argue :D

where as last year i paid £2300 and at 200 - 300 a month theres a massive diffrence also with that coverbox thing if your a good driver and stick to spead limits your insurance goes down and you get rewarded

How are you filling in the online form?

I used a few different comparison sites for mine (im 21 and just passed my test 2 months ago) and gocompare had the cheapest quotes, even from the same companys!

My quotes were around £2K aswell, out of the question on my wages, so i twisted my mams arm (not litteraly, dont phone the police) and she let me go on hers, so the way i filled out the form was her as the driver and me as the named driver (driver 2) with maximum 1000 miles a year. also made my excess about £250 and use of the car as "social including commuting to work" tell them its kep on the drive at home over night, or you might have the luxury of a garage.

Also have your insurance type set as comprehensive, for some reason its cheaper than 3rd pary fire and theft.

Got mine down to £903 or just over a grand if paying installments.

Let us know how you get on, but make sure the excess isnt going to be too much, im paying something like 30 quidd more per year for insurance than the cheapest quote for £400 excess, as apposed to the cheapest providers excess being £750

You never know it could be alot cheaper once you pass your test and your ready, insurance prices change every day.

In my opinion its common practice to embelish the truth.

Adrian Flux will deffinatly give you the best quote. Im driving a 1.4 MG ZR at the moment and my insurance runs out in december this year.

To reisure my MG its going to cost me £3200 :O with the insurer im with (More Than) with 1 years no claims behind me. To insure it with Adrian Flux next year £2800

I went on go compair for my 2L Capri GL that im restoring and hopeing to have on the road jan next year. Cheapest quote was £981. Got a quote from adrian flux and its now £877 fully comp with 1 years no claims.

Trust me Adrian Flux is the way to go. I think Capri's are cheap on insurance because they come under classics.

Just have to keep my fingers crossed that no maniac slams into me with in the next few months.

This will make you sick but im 26 my insurance is £78.00 a Year! on a 2.0 s mk3
I just go through compare the market and go compare etc just spend a good hour searching. all those above mentioned insurance companys are on there so you will still get a quote from them.
Good luck

I have a 2.0 Laser. I'm 23 and I pay £50 a month fully comp.
As mentioned above, it really is a case of getting lucky/hiking the truth a little.

You're balancing whether you'll have an accident (your fault or not) against how much you want the car.

Just be careful about bending the truth too much.

Been on the phone all day...

KwikFit: £4,000 based on the fact that my dad claimed to have a scratch (vandalism) removed last year.
Coverbox: Capri is too old!
Adrian Flux: Won't do a parent/child thing and on my own they said they wouldn't come close to £2,000

Just for comparison I tried Confused.com for a 1L Polo, my mum's insurance with me named, well over £5K! Something's happened recently, have prices gone up because of the rioting or something?

BLEH! I might have to wait 8 years before I can drive. I can't take the bus for another 8 years... :|

I tried for classic insurance and aviva wouldnt do it unless i had my licence for 25 years, not sure if thats across the board or just their policy.

you must be able to get a cheaper quote than that, it drops a bit when you turn 21.

How long has you dad been driving for?

Think my mams had her licence for 18 years, her being the official policy holder i suppose that makes alot of difference.

My dad's been driving for 40/41 years and would be the policy holder, I'd just be using it to get to and from work when doing late shifts (finishing after last train).

I turn 18 in feb and it goes down to £2,200 then, for now I'm thinking buy it, insure my dad on it for £150 and do any work it needs between now and feb, then splash out the £2K...

Well I am an insurance broker in Sutton. It's what i do and have done for 18 years now. See http://www.coops.co.uk. We insure classic cars all over the place and quite a few for the Surrey Capri Club...and it helps that i'm a fan of the old fords too. We insure the Capris from £90 upwards on classics - but forget it if your a young male driver under 25. Stats show that they cause sooo many serious claims that the insurance companies themselves cannot get the re-insurance against them at a reasonable cost/or at all and so charge extortionate rates to compensate. The box in the car is a copy of what the U.S.A have been doing for some time now and seems to be the way ahead with young drivers. If your under 25 - book a day off and phone around, but remember to read all the small print carefully....don't want to be stuck with a secret £1250 excess that you initially thought was only £250 when you first signed on the dotted line..also if your the 2nd driver, but the MAIN user of the car you must declare it...you'll find your premium increases. If you don't declare it, then come a claim the insurer has the right to withdraw settling it if they smell a rat. Also..if you have a provisional licence...just ask the insurer how much it'd be when you pass your test..you'll find the premium increases on this quite substantially too. Cheers.

Insurance companies are red hot on the "named driver on my mums policy" thing now. You will find the premiums are just as high, and as mentioned earlier, if they realise that you are driving more trhan your mum, they'll refuse to pay out if you killl someone. Upwards of £1million is a huge millstone round your neck if you have to pay someone compensation out of your own pocket.

In short - don't do it. Pay the premium for your own policy, start building some no-claims bonus and some experience, the premiums will come down when you've shown you are not an idiot behind the wheel.

Although I understand this is easy for me to say - with 25 yrs driving experience, a class 1 HGV licence and 9 yrs protected no claims, the companies almost pay me to be insured by them!

Age 17 I payed 1400 for a 1.3 h reg vw polo
age 18 I payed 900 for a mk5 escort xr3I
age 19 I payed 700 for a t reg e220 2.7 manual mercedes benz
age 20 I payed 400 for a lexus is200

all fully comp and driving 10,000 miles a year. I have always had my own policys and have always been reasonably honest with the insurers.im 24 now and just come off a year ban for speeding.the capri is costing me 800 fully comp.
still quite cheap considering iv been banned and that is still an expensive quote compared to the 650 I was quoted for a mondeo st tdci.

but I have something that no-one else seems to have mentioned...pass plus.
it dropped my first insurance by 47%
and lasts for 2 years. When I came to insure my merc which was an ebay bargain I just argued that all my other insurance was cheap and adrian flux gave me the best quote.
then that got wrote off by a pisshead in a 4x4 and I put the insurance money down as a deposit on my lexus.

what im trying to say is look into pass plus.it might be different now but when I done it it saved me a small fortune. And defo go with adrian flux.they are the way forward.
good luck mate

Reckon I'll pull the trigger on the 1.6 I've been after, terrified to do it, especially considering that there's rust to be repaired. The guy selling it pays £87 for himself and his 18 year old son so I'm certainly going to find out who that's with!

Engine is in great condition, rebuilt last year so if I get all the rust repaired, put a new interior in it, have it painted and then get myself on the insurance policy in February I'll be happy!

top tip, instead of waiting for your first year of driving to be over before you renew your insurance, wait until your next birthday. that way you'll be 18 and insurance will come down as a result, wot i'm doing is paying roughly 9 months insurance that runs out the day after my birthday, then getting insured as a 19 year old on a monthly basis then after another couple of months i'll have my years worth of driving to take another discount off, but atm i'm paying close to 3000, not bad when you consider i'm allowed 8000 miles (just wish they wern't so expensive) also put both your parents on as second drivers, my dad brought the insruance down 500 quid, as did my stepmum (though she hates driving it, too heavy XD)
Insurance wise for an 18 year old it was the Capri.... or the 1.0 fiesta. I chose the loud, shouty car instead =D

Beware of the 8 - 9 & 10 month policy trip up too. They are not worth the paper they are written on and for all intents and purpose - just a marketing ploy.
After one of the periods of time above expire they'll give you no claims bonus - but no one else in the insurance industry will accept it because it's not 1 year. . . ssssoooooo they will ask you to renew with them after of the aforementioned periods of time expires in order to acquire your 12 month no claims bonus. They would have course massively increased the renewal premium, but you have no choice other than to renew. You renew, then cancel after the period of time reaches 1 year...and they then advise that they will charge you some extortionate cancellation charges...
