Hi Friends,

I'm having a spot of bother with a 1.6 laser. She's acting funny when I push the engine a bit during acceleration. If I accelerate slowly and smoothly, then all is well, but if I put the foot down, the car kind of 'chugs'. If feels like its skipping a firing or something, like it's stalling for a second. I ease off and all is well.

Is it being starved of air? I changed the ratio on the carb a while back, and it was going fine for a good few weeks, but this has started recently. Any ideas? I's particularly bad when going up inclines or hills. I have to go real slow and keep the acceleration curve way down.

What might be going on?

From what you said it seems to be related to either the accelerator pump jet or the accelerator pump diaphragm. Maybe the accelerator pump jet isnt big enough now and you might want to try a bigger one, wich can be bought here:

Or it could be the diaphragm not functioning and if thats the problem you just have to replace it. It can also be bought on the above link. If the problem isnt the carb than i dont know what it could be and someone else will.

But if you say you changed the ratio, have you tried changing it back to how it was to see if it goes better? What carb is it?

I haven't changed it back because it was so low it was cutting out at red lights, so either way I can't go back to what it used to be. It's an old VV.

If the fuelling has been OK then I'm going to guess it probably still is and go with electrics. Could be a plug starting to break down or the condensor going west. I'd change those and see if it improves.
The plug you could probably check when it starts missing. Pull over and take them out. If one looks wet then its faulty.

I put in electronic ignition recently, that bypasses the condensor, doesn't it?

Also, would a mix too rich cause blacking plugs that would lead to this problem?

So it's not liking hills, high revs and load? I'm leaning towards electrical too.

Could be an air leak I suppose.. split hose only making itself known at high revs as the vacuum increases..

Yes rich mixture can carbon up the plugs, but they need to be really, really black and coked up before they'd refuse to spark. Take them out and see if they spark against the block whilst turning on the starter.. hold them in some good quality non-conductive substance though!

Oh its a VV carb. Than i supose its not related to jetting. But could still be ralated to the diaphragm i think..(Dont know that carb). It could also be a vacum leak as said.

I dont think that symptom indicates a rich mixture. I think that if it kind of stalls with foot dont, the mixture is getting lean in that moment, not having fuel enough to compensate the extra air when you open the throttle.

Won't start at all now. Mightn't be getting a spark. On my own so can't check properly.

my experiences with vv carbs,is chuck em in the bin and fit a webber!bloody useles things.i worked at a ford main dealer in the late 80s,early 90s there was no end of trouble with them on cortinas,escorts and sierras :?

She's booked in for a transplant tomorrow. Installing a nice weber 32/36 and K&N filter.

Hopefully that'll do the trick.

And what a useful transplant..That will probably do the trick. I never had a VV carb but, all around the internet, the common opinion about it is "Dump that!!!".. :lol:
