Car(s): Ford Capri Laser 2.1 pinto (originally 1.6) (Daily Driver)
Hi all ive got a question regarding exhaust systems on the capri, im running a modified pinto engine (modded prior to me owning it) however its running the standard manifold and exhaust system.

The downpipe to me looks to be about 2" to long as it protrudes beneath the car and im a bit dubious about wether its the original downpipe or one off a sierra or other car that used to pinto engine.

Does the downpipe normally come down quiet far beneath the car has anyone got any pics of a normal hanging exhaust?
I am considering changing to a 4-2-1 manifold and system but am wondering if this will still hang low at the front or if it will cure this issue.

In general its fine however occasionally i catch it on speed bumps and ive got a funny shaped drive and its scrapes on the way in and out, as its my daily driver id rather eliminate the problem. + its due for its test and ive found a hole in the middle section so if im gonna change the manifold and rest of it id rather do it now.

Same with mine....I think they are all like that, except V engines wich hang higher. If its not stainless an exhaust garage would possibly shape it to hang higher but..at least in my car, the exhaust is very low and still i feel a lot of heat and gases from it while i´m driving.... :xd:

And my handbrake always gets very very hot because of the exhaust pipe being underneath..

Is your car lowered? If its not the exhaust shouldnt hit any bumps and its possibly hanging too low.. :lowrider:

if its a modified pinto then chuck an ashley exhaust from rally design on it. i fitted mine a few weeks nack and dosent hang low whatso ever. its a perfect fit compared to the CCI one. Not cheap though. £130 for the manifold and £130 for the system.

Am i right in assuming that the CCI one also hangs low then?
In the interest of saving a few quid has anyone tried the peter llyod system? as thats only £90 for manifold and £90 for system.?
Otherwise i think ill go for the rally design setup as you have mentioned

Yup, my lad's Mk2 has a full PLR manifold and system on.
Ground clearance is fine. Needs some fine adjustment to clear the back axle, back left wheel etc, but that's mostly down to the 3" exit pipe, which fits close to the rear valance and leaves you less room to manoeuvre.
Look on 'Members Cars' at the 'Father & Son Capris'. His is the Dukes of Hazzard one. Not the best photos of the ground clearance, but should give some idea.

Car(s): Long term project Capri - far too many mods & far too top secret to discuss at this stage!! ;-) , Daily driver Citreon Xsara estate (my reliable little chug!) Last completed Capri project C71 HHK - 2.8i Special; full rebuild & resto by myself, sold to a guy in Devon last year, most recent vehicle project VW T4 Transporter, converted by myself as a leisure and work vehicle & to promote my business - much like my Capri project
From memory, there are three main things on a Pinto with a standard system that will cause this problem:-

1) General fit and adjustment

2) Poor condition exhaust rubbers

3) 1600's and 2 litres across the years use different front & centre sections & a mix of the wrong combo can lead to exactly what you describe; the centre section being pushed too low by a front pipe that is the wrong shape and length for it.

If you are using one complete system from one supplier and renewing all the rubber mounts, then as long as you take your time to align the system properly, I cant imagine that you'll have anymore issues! :D

I would actually suggest it may not be your exhaust rather your suspension. The rear leaf springs sag over time and so the back end starts to sit low. This often results in the car scraping its exhaust on the ground, happened to me for months until i changed the rear leaf springs since then i've had no more problems with scraping.

No embarrassment there - just means your system is fitted right first time, unlike the work of many so called professionals I have witnessed over the years :o
