Ignition Barrel -Key won't go to start position (III)

Post by Chrome_GT »

Something is up with my ignition barrel in the Capri. The key won't turn to start or position III. Have tried both my worn out keys and a spare which has the original key profile nice and sharp.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Does dry graphite lubricant help?
Has anyone had their barrels rebuilt?

I'm in NZ so getting parts of Ford is usually a no go

if your key turns past I and II i dont think it's your barrel, take the black plasic back (this has the wires going to it) off the bottom of your barrel assembly, you should then see a square hole in the middle of it, insert a screwdiver into the square hole (this will substitute key action) and turn it, if it still wont go to equivelant position III (start) then it is this is part what is knackered and not your key barrel itself.

Mine was getting difficult to turn. WD40 solved it.

Does a MK2 capri have a steering lock? Myne has never worked at all in that case. Only had the car for 10years :) Maybe that could be part of the problem. Jiggling steering wheel didn't help but i'll try agin now that i know there is supposed to be a steering lock.

CASHY IS KING
have found the fault. It is the rear switching unit as descibed by cashy. It didn't go to III. Have tried a spare which works nicely. Is this a part which is readily available new?

In the meantime i take the switch from spare and solder the orginals loom to it.
The loom on the spare is trash and firedamaged at the plug!!!!
