Quick question about a potential 2.0S purchase

Post by Neil »

Hi all I've seen a nice clean white 2.0S, very tidy inside and out, less than 100k on the clock and some history. Only got 1 month MOT and no tax. If it passes it's MoT I'm having it for 700 pounds Only problems with it are a v. high clutch bite. The seller says there's some adjustment left in it, but how much would a new clutch cost?? Also, the sunroof is v tight and is scored on top. Seller says some spring may have gone. Anyone any experience of either fixing or replacing a roof and costs? All told though, I'm quite taken with it, but I would like some advice from people in the know before I commit to it.

Thanks Neil

Changing a clutch is a big job (gear box requires remoaval) requiring specialist tools. I had mine done at 125,000 about two years ago and it cost me £110 all in. Get some quotes from a few garages. If you do get it done make sure you aske the garage to flush out the gear box and replace the oil with ATF (automatic transmission fluid) which is recommended by Ford as a replacement for gearbox oil. It improves gear change apparently.

You should be able to adjust the clutch cable so it bites lower down. Essentially you take up the slack in the cable using the adjuster located at the place where the cable goes into the bell housing. There is a description in my service guide.

The sunroof could be a right sod to repair so I would find out exactly what is wrong with it - perhaps a good dose of wd40 will ease things up a bit. You will not be able to replace the sunroof but I'm sure that the Capri suppliers will be able to get you some bits.

All in all I would try and get the price down to £550 - £600 with full MOT allowing yourself £150 for the clutch.

Thanks for the advice

Latest new is that the guy put 12 months MoT on it, all it needed was

Tighten Wheel bearings Numberplate light 2 new tyres

Seller paid for all of it and I'm picking it up tonight for the princely sum of 700 notes.

All it needs is a parcel shelf now and the sunroof fixed. I'll try WD40 first to see if that frees it up.

Cheers all,

Neil
