Ripped off again !!!!!!!!

Post by andrew chalmers »

Following the rear diff grinding problem I sourced a 2.8special axle from a Capri "specialist", said specialist supplied and fitted axle for £280 "cos its a good un" guess what, within 10 miles a noise like a distant washing machine appears and a high pitched whine at motorway speed. It also knocks as you pull away.

Done up like a kipper........

What should I expect to pay for a 2nd hand versus a recon axle or will one of the the advertised Quaife / ZF diffs fit into my original axle (if i can get it back)

Er this might seem stupid but whats the difference between an English axle / Atlas / Baby Atlas / Wide Atlas.

I just want a properly functioning LSD that will last a while, is this too much to ask ?

axles

I'm pretty sure that English Axle and atlas refer to the Sailsbury type axle and are just different names for it.

axle names

yeah, I think English and Salisbury refer to the same thing, ie the one with the pre loaded pinion bearing and the pressed steel backplate that always rusts.
As fitted to most MkII and MkIII Capris

The Atlas is the other type of axle that was used more on the Mk I Capri. This is the one which is made in two pieces, the main axle casting and a bolt on diff/pinion carrier assembly.
The other variants of the atlas are as fitted to the rwd Escorts, I think.
As far as I know the Atlas axle was a Timken design, and hence is also referred to by that name sometimes? I think.

As regards the Quaife and ZF diffs, they will probably fit, but will be rather pricey.
