HI I want to put a new ford engine into my capri does anyone know which engines will fit into the capri i want it to be around a 1.6 engine or turbo diesel and any ideas where to get them from?

Assume you are talking about a later MK III Capri, and am assuming it already has a 4 cylinder engine.
Any of the OHC engines that went in the Sierra or the Cortina before it will go in as they are the same as those fitted to the Capri. Or, one of the DOHC fuel injected engines from a later Sierra would be a really good idea. You can use the normal engine mounts and all that sort of thing that are already in you Capri, as the Sierra DOHC engine is just the old 'Pinto' OHC jazzed up a bit, so the block is the same.
If you want something about 1.6 litres then the choice is obvious, you get it from a Sierra or another Capri. Ford have only used 3 other engines of that size in the last 20 or so years; there's the old crossflow (but that is getting on a bit), the OHC (obvious choice as I've said) and then the CVH thing that went in the Escort and latterly the Sierra, but you might have trouble mounting it in a Capri. If you wanted to come up to date you could always try the current Sigma 1.6 (as fitted to Fiesta / Escort / Focus etc....) but again, you would need help mounting it, but given that people fit these in MkII Escorts it is clearly not a major difficulty.
Don't take my word for it though, ask someone else (hopefully someone else will reply to this too). These are all just ideas anyway, because I've never got involved in engine swapping!
And finally: Please do not put a Diesel engine in your Capri.

Don't knock it! If i had the resources I'd get a VW/Audi 1.9TDI engine in there and believe me it would see off a 2.8i with its in gear acceleration. And it would do 50mpg instead of 20! And it would probably be quieter than a knackered old pinto! What more could you want!

My Astra (I know, I know, won£t mention it again...) has one, and I wish my Capri was just as powerful, both on acceleration and mpg...
Anyway, somehow the classic pinto engine with all it£s simple reliable mechanics is worth to be preserved as well....

The Diesel debate
I would have to concede that a modern turbo DI Diesel would be bordering on the acceptable and would pose an interesting engineering challenge to fit it, what with the mounting logisitcs and then all the electronics. Obviously you'd have to retain the cat as well.
I think though, that Simon was interested in fitting a Ford engine. Unless he uses the very latest Ford DI engines (as in Focii) then he will fall in to the old trap of Ford Diesels being utterly appalling. I don't think any of us will ever forget the Fiesta 1.8D.
I still think his best bet will be a DOHC petrol from a Sierra (or a Granada I suppose) because it will be a much more efficient engine than the older carb fed pintos, and quite easy to do.

Diesel in a Capri
I can't see how you can compare the two ! Diesels are noisy and highly polluting and run out of balls at 5000rpm. To get any decent performance out of them they need turbocharging which pulls the fuel economy back down to petrol cars. The market for diesels is slowly collapsing in the UK; especially as the price difference is now nominal. The future is with lean burn petrol engines and solid oxide fuel cell engines. I know because my research at Cambridge is on pollution gas sensors for automotive applications.
As a proud Audi owner (audi 80 2Lt petrol) as well as a Capri owner I can tell you that the Audi has to pushed hard through all the gears to deliver the same performance as my 2Lt Capri. The engine is much less torquey. And front wheel drive is just so boring - I'm forever spinning the wheels on the Audi as there is no traction!

disasters with diesel
I used to have a Renault Megane (curse , curse) which was 1.9 DT and it was horrendous ! The engine was slow (for a turbo), the turbo used to pack up every now and then, after driving an 80 mile round trip to work, the smell gave me a headache and made me feel sick and to top it all, if you spilt any down the car or down the spare fuel can it was a nightmare to wipe up ( not nice for motorcyclists on the road either - very dangerous). Keep it petrol - I've got a recon. engine in mine off a late Cortina and it's dead reliable. Don't do diesel!
