Post by Paul Berry »

as ive had bikes most of my life im not sure about torque on the pinto head ok iknow the values from the manual and sequence of tightening and if to buy new bolts etc and if so how much do they cost. how many stages to tighten them in hot or cold , i think the head must shrink when it gets hot if you torque them when hot . any advice appreciated.

Torx bolts

Post by guitarswet »

The head bolts on most capris >1984 are torx and have a six sided slot. The older bolts were 12 splined and it is important that you do not mix them up as they have a different tightening procedure. There are diagrams in Chapter 13 of the Haynes manual.

You should replace these bolts as they stretch when tightened. They will cost about £20 for a set. Get the torx bolts even if your old ones are 12 splined as they are interchangeble on the head.

The tightening procedure is printed in Chapter 13 supplement and there is a sequence to follow (it is also printed on the side of the box the bolts come in). After the second torque at 50-55 pounds foot you need to wait five minutes and then tuen each bolt in sequence a further 90 degrees. This can be a bit scary and you need to be quite strong. But they will turn.

They need no further adjustment.
