2.0 Axle Ratios & Gearbox
Can anyone tell me the Axle ratios to type of Gearbox that suits a 2.0 Capri?
I know mine has a different axle and gear box from the factory (3.75 with a 5 Speed box). I'm guessing it doesnt probably suit the engine that well to put power down? Am I right in thinking a 3.75 with a 4 Speed would be the best? and are there a few different types of 4 speed box?
I'm not going to rush out and change this just would like to know for the future, i've only just got the Car to where I can use it . Sorry if this has been covered, couldnt find a thread on this specific topic.

I had a 125+ out of mine and it had more to give with the same axle and box as you, and it gets to 60 in about 5.5sec so I would say a 5 speed and 1.6 axle suits a Capri very nicely.
I think the original 2.0 sxles are 3.44.

ahh right ! thats interesting. I think the clutch is a bit worn/bite point high in mine so maybe thats why it feels a bit slow off the line etc. Good to know!

Forgot to add most compatible 4 speeds you'll encounter are either Type 3 or Type E. There is a Type F I think with external linkages but I never even seen one so cant comment. The Type E has a 20 splines and the Type 3 23. Type 3s have the same ratios as a Type 9. Type Es can vary, but are probably the same and the box not as strong, legend has it. To fit an E you'll need a different friction plate, a modified gearbox ctossmember and the front half of a different prop. I found mine to be a good quick box and it engaged well, like a 5 speed with Quaife gear lever. When it wasnt jumping out of gear anyway.

Strangely everything Tom says is true. As he says though it is early in the year so it may not last
A 3.75/3.76/3.77 axle would be standard with a 1.6 engine so your car may have started out this way, like mine, and it is the engine that has been changed not the axle. It is a fairly common upgrade making a 1.6 in to a 2.0.
The 1.6 axle will get you off the line a little quicker than the 3.44 usually associated with a 2.0 but you will lose a little top end but as you can still easily break the speed limits quite significantly its not really an issue.
Don't expect Tom's 0-60 time or top speed though if your car is standard. He has neglected to mention a couple of mods to his car

haha I was getting excited about that top speed! Although at the moment mine doesnt feel much quicker than my Escort Popular so the mods make sense
This Car is a 2.0 Ghia so weirdly it seems someone went to the effort of replacing the Gearbox, propshaft and Axle. I'm guessing when it was cheap enough to do. Would the speedometer be off if someones changed all this?

Re: 2.0 Axle Ratios & Gearbox
If they used the box AND axle off the same car then no as the speedo drive ratio in the `box is correct for that final drive (3.77). If someone`s fitted the axle from a 1.6 and the `box from say, a 2.0, then it will under read (or, more likely, read almost spot on: they usually show over by >5%!)CapriFreak wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:49 am Would the speedometer be off if someones changed all this?

My bog standard crapi did an indicated 125mph ......note I said indicated.
I fitted a t9 5 speed ......best thing I ever did, 1st is a bit low but it launches well ,middle 3 gears are ok and 5th sips at petrol.

Oh I forgot to add that the reason I say 125+, yes indicated , is that there were more pressing things to look at around then than the old dash. God I miss driving. Its at the garage now, for a test, but the owner got covid and closed. Finding out whats going on tomorrow.

Ohshityes crapi at terminal velocity is an intimidating experiance , got the distinct impression that if I move my weight to quick it would implode, and you can feel each suspension component trying to separate itself from the rest of the car.
