When I was young most friday nights we would pile into a car ,pick up the piss ( usually a keg ) and drive to Te Anau (and we had to be sneaky coz the local cop would be waiting for us ) , get food at the pie cart , get into a brawl with the Te Anau boys and dip the lights and head home . Sometimes we had to call for help .Dipping the lights involved driving head 1st down the boat ramp untill the headlights were under water. I saw a 57 chev and a Mazda rx3 disappear into that lake ......and my Dads boat trailer (different story ) . Wild times , we lived on piss and pies from friday arvo till sunday night .......sometimes monday the cops would give us baked beans on toast .....before releasing us in time for work

Did full beam involve balancing a big railway sleeper on the front bumper and then keeping it there by the forces of acceleration, then braking hard and sending the 'full beam' clonking down the road to see how far it goes?

No , duh ! coz that would be full railway sleeper ,I mean you coulda just said wood beam and that would have worked .....sorta

I gotta acknowledge your intuition Tom, I do have a lot of sleepers (50+) and 2 hardwood bridge beams at home (I got this thing for re purposing old wood )
