Ford brakes....

Post by Fordoholic Nick »

Was watching Fantom Works just now and Dan took a Maserati out for a brake test and it kinda reminded me of how my brakes used to be on B112

Crap brakes make you a better driver............................ if you survive long enough.
Nothing like knowing you can't stop to make you read the road better.
And the added confidence of knowing no matter how quick you brake, no-one is going to rear end you. :xd:

Truer words have never been spoken - Pounding the GL back along some country roads in the pouring rain the other day to learn the limits :drive:

Only 283mm Nick ? How common I say ,mine are 285mm what what .
Funny thing is tho I never really thought the escort /capri brakes were all that bad . Probly a bit unpredictable just on the point of lockup but that could be shit quality/knackered pads. I am lookin forward to getting things finished . I want to buy a boat ( costal fishing ) she wants to finish Capri 1st......spose it could be worse ....I did just get a new car

Mate I got the point you were making... no need to poke me in the bleedin eye.!!!

Yep totally agree re adapting your driving skills to suit the stopping ability and yes in most cases it will make you a better more aware driver for it. I drive a bus around busy N. London so I'm anticipating and reading the road all day and it still scares me the fucking fools that are about. I have 'live cargo' onboard  so can't just stand on my brakes which are seriously good !!! so I'm forever anticipating what other drivers and pedestrians might do so drive my bus as though the brakes are M16's with drums on tbe back with my passengers safety and comfort in mind

Seriously though my brakes were really starting to make me twitch at times so especially after getting the engine mods I've had done it made sense for me personally to upgrade the brakes too but not as big as Hamish who has 285mm discs    .

But I still and always will read and anticipate what's going on no matter what brakes. Just gives me a bit more confidence. :)

Yeah , Id probly like that . Ha ha , the last pom ( gas fitter from Newcastle ) I had in my boat fair shit himself ( he had 2 life jackets on ) when he found out I intended to go thru French Pass (google it ) and again when some orca's ( mother and baby ) mobbed our boat and I tried to push him in. There is a spot in every boat where its not possible to get further from the water.......thats where he was . Funniest thing I ever experienced , broard geordie accent in full panic ,couldnt make out a word he said :swear: , arms flailing about like semaphore, I have never been called so many names in one sentence.....not that he took a breath, and then, and then  he told everyone at work it was the best day out he had ever had.
Nick , if you ever make it here Id love to take you fishing .......

Hamish I just googled French Pass. To be honest I'd not heard of it mate

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Aumiti_/_French_Pass

Wow it sounds a very famously dangerous place fella.!! Very narrow and those tides through it are amazing!!! You would need to be a competent helmsman/fisherman to navigate through there in one piece if the weather took a turn for the worse !! Greatest respect to you Mr H but I can kinda see why that pom put on two life jackets!!

That encounter with the Orca Whales must have been absolutely stunning if not a bit scary but still to see these beautiful creatures up soooo close and personal must have been just amazing !! Not only this it's a stunning part of the world too. You're a lucky fella Hamish to have all this on ypur doorstep... Or should that be on your foredeck

Hamish I would love to visit NZ one day mate. Breathtaking scenery and I've heard the locals are pretty friendly too!!! Funny thing mate is I actually worked in a Yacht Chandler for 17yrs after I left school as soon as I got my exams out of the way. University was not for me. I was crazy into sailing back then and me and my brother took part in regattas. We won the National Schoolboy Championship Regatta back in the late 80s representing good old Haringey .... So I got water in my blood  ... but reckon like your pom mate I would put on two life jackets if you ever bring me through Thd French Pass.!!!!

You'll be worried now I might actually take you up on this if we ever get over to NZ  ....spending a day in your boat with me would make navigating thru the French Pass in a force 10 seem like a piece of bleedin cake !!!... But it would be very cool Hamish :)

I never went through French Pass when I was in NZ, thank goodness, but I did go through Marlborough Sound (on the inter - island jet cat) which was exqisitely beautiful. It was an unbelievable welcome to the South Island and I knew from then that I would love the South Island, which I very much did.

I liked Ivercargill where you are, the folks were very friendly and helpful and I went from there to Stirling point, Bluff, which was as far away as I could get from the UK.

The only thing I regret that whilst in Invercargill I didn't go and see Bert Monroe's Indian motor bike, but I had two Swedish Birds with me and they weren't interested.

Just in case this is getting confusing ,Me and Di have always been southlanders but we moved to Nelson in 01 for my work ,had the crash in 09 and moved back to southland in 14. Nelson / Marlborough was my fishing place .
The Orcas are pretty cool ,mostly inquisitive and I dont ever recall one hurting anyone. I have had a few encounters ,once watched a diver (from 200 odd meters ) head out of the water talking to someone on the boat ....with the fin dead still about 20feet behind him , dunno what the guy on the boat said but the diver turned round .....love to know what was going thru his head......didnt panic but didnt waste much time gettin in the boat.
French pass sounds real wild but a lot of ships go thru there ,good to watch if they are going against the tide ,motors going flat out , heaps of smoke and it take a few minutes to pass you by. The pass itself is fun in a boat . The currents and eddy's swirl about like the water is boiling and as you wizz thru the boat zigs and zags by itself ,passengers need to be warned to sit down and hang on and some whirlpools are 30 feet across and a good foot deep so you gotta hit them mid centre , if you clip the edge you can be in for a bloody rough ride .
Nick , at the risk of being vilified by the other Kiwi's here ( the last thing we need is another :swear: pom  ) you wouldnt have much trouble getting a job here ,boating is a growing industry here . I did a lot of sailing as a kid ,in a "Flying Fifteen " yacht, and Paper Tiger and Tornado catermerans .
In Invers there is now the "Motorcycle Mecca" motorbike museum and the main local hardware store ( E Hayes & Son ) has gone big on Burt Monroe stuff .
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

I like Fantom Works, it's probably the second best TV car show after Bangers and Cash.
They always have that moment of (contrived?) drama on every test drive they take, where they discover that the brakes, or whatever, don't work properly. Surely they inspect the cars before taking the things out on the road?

Andrew.
