Road salt

Post by Mc Tool »

Just been round my various web sites and it seems the poms are complaining ( must be a national passtime or something :xd: ) about road salt and the corrosion it causes ,which is understandable ,who wants to see their classic vapourising from the ground up. All things considered are you guys for or against . Are there other options? Its easy for me to bag it coz we rarely have roads iced up so bad as to become impassable ( and opinions are obviously divided on that judging by all the upside down cars about the place when the weather does take a shit ).

 Hamish I am working tonight on the buses and just been thinking "Fuck, they've only gone and bleedin dumped salt all over the road"

Yep it's there for a reason and cause B112 ain't my daily drive it not a major disaster. Wonder what, if any, options there are for replacing salt as you say..... Maybe they could run underfloor heating pipes throughout the UK roads :)

Without a doubt the salt is a car killer especially when it becomes that slushy shit that the wheels throw up into every crevice under a Capri, saying that though without the salt on the roads the snow would probably cover the thousands of suspension breaking, tyre bursting potholes we have on most of our roads.. worst of two evils I guess.

Yeah I guess when I think about it most of our snow and ice related driving issues are in the mountain passes and places of high altitude where one doesnt normally live but usually are passing thru on ones way to somewhere else ,and a set of chains most often does the job. Just going about your daily busness is different .
Wonder where all that salt winds up, dont get me wrong I aint no tree hugger but it would seem there are literally shitloads :xd: of the stuff used ....must be buildin up somewhere :)

I think there is a lot of scare mongering and over the top whinging about 'salt'. I don't know what evidence anyone has that it causes so much grief, if any. There are many times over the year where the roads are heavily salted/gritted, but the same cars are driving through it year after year without rusting away, and that includes many classics in my area. I've previously driven my Capri throughout winters, in the worst of the weather, and nothing unusual happened and I loved it.

We call it salt but it is more of a sand/grit. And to answer your question Hamish, it all ends up in the drains I should think.

My Capri came from the UK and it has been well coated with some stuff , looks like varnish but about 2mm thick and you can see where it has started to drip before hardening , my car is almost rust free , bit round the lh headlight a and sides of scuttle .
I been watching Ed china and the underside of most cars have thick rust ...even on bits that here would be oil caked like wishbones and half shafts to say nothing of the panels . Shit ,that reminds me I have to dig out all the foam in behind the rear wheel arches on crapi before they start to get the cancer .
I didnt realise untill today that its mostly sand .
I think of Nick and his nice car ....I dont even drive my good cars on the beach .I would be gutted to have to drive in salt , be it on the beach or wherever if my capri had to be a daily driver , bit ocd but that would really burn me ...I would have to make some sort of car rinse ( like a sheep dip spray thing ) faaaark I loose sleep wondering if my fuel tank is rusting inside while parked up ( empty and well ventilated ) dont wanna think about the discs

I never thought you would be like that Hamish. That's not meant to be a criticism though. I just didn't think that mindset was part of your character.

What.?? Like me.?? :o

Day after I picked up B112 from Tickover recently me and Tom went for a drive and all was going grand then we turned left on to a narrow ish lane which was just covered in CRaP !!!!!! It was a sort of sand and mud from some bleedin farmer no doubt. Had traffic behind so nowhere to go but to drive through it. Poor Tom could see me cursing from half a mile ahead  We parked up further up the road once through it and Jesus the bottom of B112 was just covered in a muddy sandy crap !!!!!! Not gonna lie and say "ahh it's only sand and mud"... I was fucking gutted

Now this I like.!!! I could have done with this Hamish. Great idea.!!! There was no way I could have parked mine in the garage covered in that shit so spent over an hour cleaning it all off. Like you Hamish I would not have been able to have slept that night and that's why I personally don't drive mine in bad weather

Im not so much a clean freak but rather I do like looking after my gear.
Owning a brand new outboard motor that I mostly used in sea water was a strain ....knowing the feckin thing was pumping salt water all round its innards where I couldnt see it.
I have a friend with one of them harley davidson things, all shiny and noisey. Used to take the piss coz he would only ride on nice days , but then when I saw how long it took him to clean a days crud off it I left him alone ,actually I could never figure out how his harley always looked good when I didnt really like them ,dawned on me one day that it was because it was always spotless :D

Funny you should say about that foam behind the rear wheels Hamish, one of my car's is starting to rot in that area and that bloody foam is starting to literally push through the panel - in the right hands it's an easy fix but as always that easy fix costs a lot of bucks.

I'm currently having my late father's car restored and the specialist who's doing it told me his father worked in Ford's during the Capri production year's and Ford never designed the Capri to last longer than around 7 year's - it was literally a throw away car, so in theory it's a miracle any of them are still around!
