I don't envy you Peter having to scrape all that blackjack off to find clean metal to weld to.

Plant a vial of seawater on the tester and then claim he must have done it.

Pretty much - this is what the RAC website says about rust;

Sharp edges on the bodywork caused by corrosion or accident damage are not permitted, as they could injure pedestrians.

Rust is an MOT issue more generally, particularly for older cars. Excessive corrosion on safety-related parts, such as the steering and brakes, is a no-no, while rust within 30cm of these components may also result in a fail.

Could be rusted to buggery but apparently it's fine if it's not sharp and doesn't affect the structural integrity so that it folds in half?

What about if it's within 30 cm of the brake pedal mounting?

Peter, if its any consolation I've only just noticed this post of yours mate

Perhaps I should have left the hole to see what the mot man says! However, since it runs up to the sill which is structural and can't be much more than 30 cm from the seat runner front bolt I exercised a little pigeon poo welding repaired the grot.

Satisfying? Think I need a bit more practice to get to that level. First time out with a Mig though so I guess it was actually satisfying in the sense that the repair worked

Yes of course, you have fixed it and will enable you to carry on driving, brilliant. I just find welding to be fascinating, I find myself looking around for things to make just to weld for fun!

Yep , I just love the feeling of red hot mig spatter sizzling on my skin ,or in my ear, or resting on the waistband of my undies ( under overalls ), in my shoe , or the " pick it up while its still #ucking hot " sizzle . They reckon when your mig is properly set up welding sounds like sizzling bacon.....more like sizzling me , and I sure dont smell like bacon when Im being "caramalised " a small bit at a time.

Usually welding underneath something, or cramped conditions. Part of one of my aprentiseships saw me working at a sheetmetal shop where we built huge ( big as a 20' shipping container ) coal fired burners for heating comersial glass houses and I had to get right inside the burners and heat exchangers to weld the inner seams , probly a 1/3 of welding was overhead and spatter rained down on me , youd be surprised where it ends up

Yep, ended up with a few of those in the palm of my hand from welding under the car. Guess that's why the instructions say wear gloves at all times. Maybe next time
