They say this every couple of years, I don`t think it`ll ever happen.
Then you always get what it would look like: "Luckily, independent artist, Fabien Rougemont, has published a bunch of sketches that give us an idea of what a revived Capri could look like, and we like what we see."
So IF this guy got a job at Ford, and IF he became chief designer, then this is what the car MAY look like. Or not. TBH it`ll have to look like an Audi/Jag/ whatever as they all have to for aerodynamic, crash protection, pedestrian protection... There`s not much scope for anything much different. Bit gloomy but there you are.

Ford may, in the future, release a car with the Capri name, but it won't be the Capri so it doesn't matter.

Andrew.

I have to agree, there is a new rumour about a modern Capri about once a year, and as Steve says, they're pure speculation with no details coming from Ford themselves.

With the Mustang now being available in the UK, I find it highly unlikely they're introduce another front-engine RWD coupe to the lineup. They might, as others have said, reuse the name but it'd likely be nothing like an original Capri, it'd probably be FWD.
They've just done the same with the Puma name. The old one was a fantastic little hot hatch / pseudo coupe based on the Fiesta but with a more sporty setup. Sure they were a bit of a "hairdresser" car at the time but they actually make a great track car, I have one. The new one is an SUV!

It's a nice idea and half of me loves the thought that they'd bring out a tastefully modernised RWD revamp of the Capri with a V6, IRS, disk-brakes, etc. The other half of me thinks that whatever they do it'll never live up to the legend that we have and would likely just tarnish the name.

I say leave the legend of the Capri in the annals of history. The same applies to the Sierra, Granada, Escort, Cortina, Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac and all the other legendary names.

If Ford want to bring out a new sports coupe (which I doubt will happen anyway with them cutting car production in the USA) then call it something new and market it as such.

For me it's not going to happen. I am pleased it's not. I think as said its about being progressive. The Capri is more then just a name, it's an era, a moment in history. It's like driving classics, as much as you remember the times you can never bring them back.

With Ford playing catch up with Active to bridge a gap but the electric SUV's come to market it would be wasted expense. The 2+2 Coupe Market is small and dominated by premium brands, the Capri was never about that it was an affordable car with ferrari desirability. I just cannot see a big enough market and in uncertain time shy take risk.

My uncle is the chairman of ford Europe now and he told me the "Capri" name will never be revived.

Certainly with music, TV and film, everything they remake seems to be dire when compared to the superior original. Makes you wonder why they keep doing it.

And they have to make it PC too

It happened that's how it was, you can't and shouldn't change history/the past!!

I spoke to Amko Leenarts, the designer quoted, and he design entire team back in the summer, there's no doubt that he does love the Capri as you'll see here. https://www.stevesaxty.com/videos We spent plenty of time discussing Capri as you'll see.

Amko is no fool and the idea of a Capri, to quote, "pick up on its zeitgeist" is the key. Obviously the market for RWD midsized coupes is long dead as the majority of people outside of car enthusiasts find RWD a huge turn off. The failure of the Toyota GT86 in exactly that segment proves the point. Ford has the Mustang but its from an anomaly in the US of muscle cars like the Camaro and Charger. Although I prefer driving the Camaro over the Mustang its because it is a more sophisticated and pricier machine - but it doesn't sell. The Mustang is to many the better looker and does really well in Europe, Ford doesn't need, and certainly couldn't make any money, on a smaller, cheaper RWD Capri-like coupe.

If you have my book and read the whole gruesome saga of S272 in 2003 you'll know they went there with a New Capri but pulled the plug.

So the only test is whether Mustang Mach E, like Puma transfers to an SUV nameplate. Unlike the majority of opposite lock heroes I have no dislike of SUVs as I work in the industry - we the people failed to buy the GT86 and now the Renault Alpine struggles. Cars are effectively done and all we can hope for is that if Ford ever uses Capri as a nameplate then its a more romantic-looking vehicle. That may be tough, and to some impossible, with an SUV but I liked the look of Puma and Mach E when I looked over than and adore driving a Macan. I spend plenty of time on track in my Cayman GT4 but the Macan is more fun more of the time.

The world changed.

Spot on! Just looks like every other SUV, a squashed turd on wheels. I know I`m out of date and that`s what people want, but for Christ`s sake - to call that a Mustang?

It's just wrong to call that a Mustang!
