Sinclair C5

Post by pbar »

I saw a couple of these at the weekend at a show. It's an absolutely baffling invention. Anyone here ever have one or know of anyone?

I remember when they came out, but never had one or knew anyone that had one. I think the look on Elfyn Thomas face says it all

Would this be subject to the new 74db law? Unless it has an exhaust probably not :?

There was one I saw at Deal car show the other week, trundled through the car park.

More interestingly - maybe - I have just taken on an employee whose husband runs a local club. They have around 30 of the beasts that you can hire for a little run out around the coast and it seems people do!

Great replies, thanks guys, and loved the clips. There is a jet powered one even. There is currently one on ebay with superb modifications, if they were made like this originally they would have fared much better (although impossible with 80's tech) -

That's incredible, must be the most in one location anywhere in the world.

It's amazing that when the C5 was introduced everybody scoffed at Sir Clive, but with the benefit of hindsight, could it be that this form of electric personal transport was years ahead of it's time?

Always the way - mind you they were way too small and low down (and slow) to be safe. I was driving for a living at that time but I`ve still never seen a single one on the road. I remember the last ones being sold off by Comet, remember them?

I've seen one being used on the road, at the Queen Square meet.

It was quite amusing as quite a lot of the young people there didn't have a clue what it was.

I certainly do! On a similar note, I was looking through one of my old books a few weeks ago and came across a receipt from Great Mills. Do you remember them and Texas Homecare too? Those were the days! Many a Sunday afternoon was spent looking around those stores. :D

Andrew.
It is a fair point that, just a shame that he was held back by the tech of the day. The battery for example, realistically would give 6-10 miles, the one I posted the link to on ebay (with alternate modern battery) offered 100 miles.

Edit: Sinclair's nephew is working on a new version (see my later post/pic on this thread), so we shall find out I guess if it was ahead of it's time, will this one fare better?)

I remember seeing at least one back in the day, locally. Was a rare sight though!
