heard it all now....
heard it all now....
This is something I thnk Pbar`s touched on previously. Just watching the Chase: 1st contestant is an `early years practitioner` - which in the real world translates to a nursery nurse. I mean FFS!
Another thing, when did the word give/giving/given die out and what was wrong with it? Why is suddenly everything `gifted`? a word which didn`t exist 5 years ago*. Is it `cos it sounds softer and kinder? And Bailiffs becoming Sheriffs, yellow school buses, high school proms..... Bah!
*it may have existed but was certainly not in common usage in my lifetime.

Re: heard it all now....
I blame the evolution of our language and culture on the American TV shows that have saturated our TV schedules over the years.
My new pet hate is the increasingly common use of the word headed, as in "Where are you headed?" to mean "In which direction are you travelling?". In my day headed meant something with a head, such as headed paper. As far as I'm aware, it wasn't going anywhere.....
Rant over.
Andrew.

Our friends from across the pond have a lot to answer for.
People that put 'so' at the start of a sentence, and say 'like' every other word are my current pet hates
Re: heard it all now....
So... I was going to include that but didn`t want the list to get too long. I`ve noticed also `error` (the yank mispronunciation of `era`) creeping in too... One last moan, what I consider to be THE most pretentious, in a series of pretentious adverts: the one for an Apple pad something or other. Black and white, deep meaningful (sounding) quasi poetry of mankind`s aspirations; old black jazz musicians, young street urchins but with hope burning within! Unbelievably cliched pseudo artistic garbage, laughable - BUT they`ve even invented a brand new word for this one `overstanding`. Presumably that`s a more superlative version of understanding? I mean over`s better than under, right? Absolute bollocks.: hello possible.andyd wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 6:03 pmAndrew,Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 5:25 pm I blame the evolution of our language and culture on the American TV shows that have saturated our TV schedules over the years.

Re: heard it all now....
We also seem to have lost the word have.
Almost everywhere I go I hear something like 'Can I get a latte, can I get a portion of chips', etc
Please can I HAVE a latte.
Politeness, manners, respect, that's what we are discussing here you know, or rather the lack of them.

Re: heard it all now....
Yes that's a good one to mention, everyone has to Smash it at the moment.
And why do people have to have a Shout Out, keep hearing that a lot. I'd like to give a Shout Out to Steve for starting this thread.
Also, everything (especially from a politicians mouth) seems to be Fundamental. Seem to hear that word every time I watch the news.
So, why does everyone seem to be starting sentences with the word So these days!

Re: heard it all now....
I commented on So above.
Usually younger people say this when asked a question, but Conservative James Cleverly (Running for PM) did it alot on a TV interview yesterday, and I have noticed a few other older people too
Most likely habits that people don't even realise.

Re: heard it all now....
American TV/culture has been massive over here for decades though, a lot of the highest rated TV shows in the 70's/80's (Starsky & Hutch, Hulk, Knight Rider, the Bionics, the list goes on), are American, but it only seems now that the niggles affecting us all as listed on here are saturating us.Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 5:25 pm I blame the evolution of our language and culture on the American TV shows that have saturated our TV schedules over the years.
Reality TV perhaps is a reason for it? But then again the majority of those are British shows.

Re: heard it all now....
This has amazed me for some time! Looking through the local paper to see what jobs are available, I don't even know what most of them actually are or what they do.
What's wrong with being a kids nurse, a tyre fitter, a bin man, a plumber. Who wants to be a technical field advisor, a project manager or a marketing events manager?
I can only assume that people craze jumped up titles and wallow in the pretence of it all.
Re: heard it all now....
I think you`ve smashed it there Paul!
Two countries divided by a common language. Did you know that sulphur is no longer the correct spelling for sulphur? It`s now, officially, `sulfur` the american way. Why? How hard was the extra letter? I find that strangely annoying??
Going back a while, the speech `habit` which I`m sure came from Australian soaps - the raising of the `pitch` at the end of every sentence turning every statement into a question? That used to drive me mad?
Apparently, according to research a couple of years ago, a worrying percentage of kids think the emergency number is 911.... Our culture is just drowning in the masses and masses of imported media.

Re: heard it all now....
There was a pop group called that, pop is a major cultural influence as we know.
This problem never happened with Slade!
Ellipsis is very overused now for some reason. Even happens on here a lot, people put them in a lot of posts, not sure why this has become a modern trend........................
Re: heard it all now....
Guilty as charged! (must admit I had to google that.......)
I think it`s to suggest that the sentence has ended but the subject/thought is still ongoing, if that makes sense? Never really thought about it b4. (see what I did there?)

Re: heard it all now....
Most of the use of ellipsis is done incorrectly, it just seems to have become a modern trend to overuse it.
Virtually every thread on here has them, and I just noticed that your thread title has it, as you say, guilty as charged!

Guilty
Again a bad habit, must try harder....
Unlike most of the snowflake/millenial generation, I can admit when I'm wrong or incorrect and not be offended

Re: heard it all now....
What a stellar comment. Respect Andy.
As a country we won two World Wars, a snowflake attitude wasn't, and counldn't, be allowed. We have a cup of tea and get on with it. It is a mindset we need to get back.
Re: heard it all now....
Paul,
Within certain age groups there seems to be little respect or thought for our ancestors that fought for this country, and more respect for 'celebrities', and that's a sad thought.
The country needs to become 'Great' Britain again, and not a bunch of easily offended wimps that expect everything they want and demand change if it doesn't suit them.

One last one, literally.
It really annoys me when you get someone on TV talking about how something `literally tore me apart`; ` I was literally climbing the walls/ dying of thirst/ ` et cetera. Not to mention I`ll give it 110%.
Was just thinking about what Paul said about Starsky and Hutch etc in the `70s, I don`t remember them actually making much, if any, impact on the language, not like now, inverting meanings, (sick, wicked etc) I think the whole `street culture` rap etc has had a huge and negative input. Mostly that, for boys to be clever is uncool, thug is the way to go. (This was identified in some kind of Government white paper into why certain kids were failing - it was uncool to be clever!) Whole new issue that.
