This is the video of Rod Mansfield and me at Dunton last December. He'd not been back in decades and it was a mere thirty years for me. So it was an honor to be asked back and speak to everyone there!

SVE days for me are so nostalgic, that is really my era and what really kick started my real enthusiasm for Ford, it made me bunk off school and collect brochures from my local dealer so much so that my YTS days (yes remember those) also began there only to be cut short by a cycling accident. The voices on the car ads, the images of the cars are so nostalgic. What I find really interesting is that SVE cover and feature most model types in the majority of owners clubs, I think even though the MK1 Escort had rallying success and the Capri was introduced in 1969 its the 80's where Ford really won hearts and minds Great pic in the book of the SVE team with those cars, would make a great poster for any garage.

Do you mind if I send that to Rod?, I think it will make him smile.

BTW he still lives with Val in the same house today that he's pictured in below. He loved going along that day last December to Dunton and I'm pretty sure he'll come along to the Capri event at Dunton in September. We had some fun stories to recall over lunch - I chided him that he loaned me his Sierra Cosworth one night and I offered him my Tickford in return and he said no thanks, he was just use a pool car and I was crushed. On another occasion, later in the 90s I was working at Lotus and he'd recently left. We met for lunch and I was running late and couldn't refuel. Rather than take my Elise I used my MX-6 which had Japanese-market 4WS. He says, "Right I think 4WS is great, let me try it." So this time, when I didn't want him to drive my car he's off down the road at a rate of knots. Me knowing that it's low on petrol and Rod saying, "There, did you feel fuel starvation at high speed?" My ties were curling.

We didn't run out of fuel - but I would rather wish he'd borrowed the Tickford some years earlier instead....

No absolutely not go ahead. I think a smile in exchange for truly great cars and happy memories is a fair exchange.

I used to have many a car with the same fuel starvation issues! Low income determined the weight of my right foot. I remember when 30mpg was a good figure.

I can't believe he didn't take the Tickford, maybe he didn't want to be responsible for breaking it!

I still have a lot of the brochures from back then and still have the XR3i posters that were on my bedroom wall. I own a XR3i Cabriolet that incidently was a Ford car as well as owning a Capri.

They always say you belong in an era and never really leave it. For me the 80's was where my dreams were, the problem was the draw of the Ford dealer made sure that school was second place and YTS wages as a result meant I couldn't afford a car until a few years later, quite ironic really. I was still cycling on £27.50 a week whilst my friends were all being paid nearer £100 and driving. The nearest I got to it at 17 was driving my girlfriends car around car parks,

I think the XR range of cars always primarily looked good,
