How Much!!
How Much!!
Would you pay this much for an 80's Ford https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Escort- ... rmvSB=true
The RS new would have been around £23000 in todays money.
The advert suggests it's an ornament now, and that's a hell of a price to pay for something to look at! You can buy a 1:18 scale for a lot less!!
If you have more money than you know what to do with, then this would be like buying an almost new car and then driving it as was intended 35 years ago, but at a much inflated price.
Sad, but this will probably never be driven again

Re: How Much!!
I've got to say that I love the RS1600i, but even I have to admit that's crazy!
I suspect it's just a speculative and hugely optimistic price to begin with, just to see if anybody bites.
Andrew.

RS TAX again
As you say lovely cars Andrew, but these prices are completely ridiculous Some dealers are ruining Classic Car affordability through pure greed
When the bubble bursts, some people are going to be left with a lot of egg on their faces

“ Holy Bat Pants “ that is a lot but they do say something is only worth what somebody is willing to pay . Me yes I love the Rs1600 but would have a Xr3i at under 10k

Re: How Much!!
It's amazing how much they've gone up. I sold a black H-Reg XR3i about 8 years ago and had a job to get £500 for it, even with a full MOT and it being reasonably tidy. Wish i'd kept that instead of my SD1!

You're right, most 70s and 80s Fords have doubled in price at least over the last 5 years

Re: How Much!!
I've only just noticed that the dealer even states that the car is "pretty much unusable" and only suitable for a high-end collection. It's only covered 17 miles in 15 years.
Thinking about it, yes nearly £100K is silly, but is £70-£75K really that unrealistic for some collectors to pay? Remember that an S1 RS turbo with 5568 miles sold for £60,188 at auction two and a half years ago. The 1600i is a pretty rare car these days, and even though more were built than the S1, there appears to be fewer left in existence.
Andrew.

IMO, it's not good for any car to do that little mileage in 15 years.Andrew 2.8i wrote:I've only just noticed that the dealer even states that the car is "pretty much unusable" and only suitable for a high-end collection. It's only covered 17 miles in 15 years.

£70k would be more realistic, but still way too much money for essentially a souped up Mk3 Escort....
It would be nice to have that sort of money to even consider if you wanted it in your collection.
It only takes one car to sell at a high price and that's it, similar cars are then priced out of reach of most enthusiasts!!
On the back of this, parts become extortionate too All a little depressing really
Far from cheap but still useable on a nice day https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/A-Very-Rare- ... SwdBZax3SQ

It wouldn't have done the car much good.andyd wrote:IMO, it's not good for any car to do that little mileage in 15 years.
I suppose that's just the way things seem to be going. For the moment at least.andyd wrote: It only takes one car to sell at a high price and that's it, similar cars are then priced out of reach of most enthusiasts!!

I'm going to check down the back of the sofa for lost change straight away!andyd wrote:It would be nice to have that sort of money to even consider if you wanted it in your collection.
I agree that the red 1600i looks like much better value for money, although it could be said that even that car is priced well out of reach of the man in the street.

Re: How Much!!
'Hot Hatch' 'Fords could be taking over from the likes of the Capri
They seem to be popular with 40/50 somethings who have spare cash, and want to relive their youth.
Going back a couple of years that 102 mile Austin Maestro didn't sell for anywhere near a Ford equivalent but still the same era....
15 years ago 50/!00k price tags were for Aston Martins, Bentleys, and Ferraris etc, how times have changed
My Sierra is still one of the cheapest Old Fords available to buy today

Re: How Much!!
This 'stupid' pricing is down to the people who used to collect expensive watches etc now turning to classic cars. The bubble will burst, It did in the late eighties, and it will again. We the true classic car enthusiasts just have to ride it out. I watch ebay and all the classic car magazines and the same cars come up for sale all the time. They aren't all selling. Somebody once paid daft money for a mint Cosworth and every Tom, Dick and Harry think that their car is worth a mint! Something is only worth what somebody is actually prepared to pay for it. You can ask 97 thousand all day for an Escort, it's a different thing somebody coming along and actually buying it.
Re: How Much!!
How come the Escort is pretty much unusable then?
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

No petrol in it?Major_Tom wrote:How come the Escort is pretty much unusable then?
The seller states that it is "purely an ornament to be showcased or the missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle in a very high end collection".
To a certain extent, I have to agree with that. I can't see somebody spending nearly £100K on the car to drive it regularly.
Andrew.
