Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
My pet hate is Ed China , who else but them to clowns would spend time and money "refurbishing " a set of wheels to "better than new " and then refit them with rusty old wheel nuts......or fit a new clutch slave cylinder .....and not clean all the crud off where it bolts on ......with huckery old bolts.
Problem is is that these programs have become fashionable now that all the rich arseholes are waking up to the fact that us poor bastards might be on to a money spinner with our old bombs. Unfortunately these programs are designed for the mechanically ignorant and anyone with an ounce (28g) of know how will easily spot the bullshit , as evidenced by the above pages, and , for me any way the 1st bit of crap ruins the integrity of the whole show. Having said that if you want to see master bullshitters in action just watch a bit of these "how it's made " ......these idiots can't even ..........ah fuckkit ! you guys know what I'm in real danger of launching into a rant about

Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I hold my hands up - I do actually like Edd China, certainly compared to some of the others. However even some of the stuff he says is crap: last one I saw he was fitting a stainless exhaust, explaining that stainless steel won`t corrode because there`s no iron in it.
Having said that, and having watched the Fiat 500 EV in GWG, at least when Wheeler Dealers USA did an EV conversion on that Maserati - they did explain what was involved and show it all being fitted. So credit due there.

Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
The best ever shows by a mile were the ones presented by Mark Evans, you don't even see them repeated anymore but nothing currently being touted as a car show comes anywhere close.

If you're interested, Scrapyard Supercar is also filmed in Manchester, at a real scrapyard somewhere.
Andrew.
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
100% Martin!
2003 A car is born (AC Cobra replica), then a car is reborn (E Type Jaguar) and a MG is born (MGB Roadster) were real in depth for proper enthusiasts, not bad for someone who trained as a vet
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
Don`t forget the helicopter, not something everyone could make at home but still, very interesting. (resisted the temptation to use `chopper`)
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I didn't watch that Steve but he has done quite a few.
From his wiki page;
In 1999, Evans co-devised the workshop-based "Is Born" format for Discovery Networks Europe. Since then, he has co-produced and presented ten series for Discovery Home & Leisure (now Discovery Real Time) and are often repeated on Discovery's Quest channel. The shows have transmitted in over 70 countries around the world.
A Car Is Born (build of an AC Cobra replica) - 15 episodes
A Plane Is Born (build of a 200 mph kit aeroplane) - 15 episodes
A Car Is Reborn (total restoration of an E Type Jaguar) - 15 episodes
A Chopper Is Born (build of a kit, two-seater helicopter) - 15 episodes
A Bike Is Born - Harley (restoration of a Harley WLC45) - 5 episodes
A Bike Is Born - Bonneville (restoration of a Triumph Bonneville T120R) - 5 episodes
A Bike Is Born - Trike (build of a Boom Power Trike) - 5 episodes
A Race Car Is Born (build of a Westfield race car) - 15 episodes
A 4x4 Is Born (build of an extreme off-road Land Rover) - 15 episodes
An MG Is Born (restoration of an MGB Roadster) - 10 episodes
Wreck Rescue - follows his journey to help inspire and motivate the restorers of five very different vehicles to achieve their own restoration dreams.
Wood Wizard with Richard Blizzard (crafting wooden objects) 15 episodes
He also co-devised and presented Dream Machines - a vehicle restoration series on Channel 5.
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I know they used to use a scrapyard on the edge of Bolton for a sort of `reality` show, just following the day to day running, can`t remember what it was called now? I used to go there a lot in the `90s for the Viva as it was massive, and all the Manchester ones had become `off the shelf` only: I loved clambering around on a Sasturday morning, in fact this pic is from that very yard, around 1997.Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:49 am If you're interested, Scrapyard Supercar is also filmed in Manchester, at a real scrapyard somewhere.
I`ll keep my eyes open next time I catch Scrapyard Challenge now I know that. Ah, just noticed, not the program I`m thinking of - Scrapyarrd Supercar that`s the one where they build a car to compete with the presenter`s Laborghini isn`t it? I`ll try to catch that, is it still showing
Here`s another pic just as a reminder what a proper scrapyard was like:
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
Andy,
am I completely losing it or do I remember him doing a Capri with John Hill to compete in a rally???

Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I remember that, it was a yellow mark 1 for use in an autotest, if I remember correctly.
Brilliant scrapyard photos there, Steve. Wasn't it good they way they used to just let people climb up a stack of precariously balanced cars to remove their own parts? None of that is allowed these days, as you say, you're only allowed to buy the parts off the shelf which adds to the cost.
Andrew.
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
Yes he did Steve, it's a good one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1x3e5IdzzA
I remember walking around scrap yards when I was a kid Imagine that nowadays, H&S would had a fit
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I know, I mean there was the obvious thing of climbing up a pile of (slimy) cars, but there was also razor sharp metal all over the place, there were even things in the mud that would pierce normal shoes! But the fun to be had - I so miss it! People did cut their hands open - but that was part of the chance you took, there was no sueing, you bandaged it up & carried on! I`m pretty certain that my spare set of switches (HRS, Fog etc) came rrom the white A reg which only had 50 odd thousand miles on it and was really tidy inside. Worrying when you think how I got them

Brilliant pictures Steve, love snapshots in time like this. If you'd known, you could have removed the radios & sunroof handles too. Who could have predicted the current values of something so ordinary.

Don't bother, it's not!Caprifan Rob wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:17 pm Haven't heard of Scrapyard Supercar Andrew, will give it a look if its worth watching.
Just caught he end of the Goblin Works Fiat 500 episode as I was waiting for Salvage Hunters, also featuring a Fiat 500, to come on.
We know from Dr. B that the Goblin Works supposed sale prices are a work of fantasy, and I think the Fiat 500 was no exception to that.
Salvage Hunters is alright, worth watching overall I'd say, but why is Drew so fixated on insignificant details? How much of the show was dedicated to some new number plates and showing a bloke painting on the dashboard?
I loved the NSU, but you have to wonder why the collector didn't get the dent and aluminium trim sorted out before selling? Especially as the work supposedly added so much to the final value of the car.
Andrew.
Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
I agree, didn`t they once pay someone to paint a wicker effect on the side of a minor? Looked shocking. The 500 was annoying because it was an original idea to put electric power in - but tey skipped over everything bar screwing the motor on (the simple bit). As has been said, it`s the opposite of Mark Evans` `a xxxx is born`

Funnily enough, it IS how I came to have a spare, indirectly. Every Capri you found, the sunroof winder had already gone so I put 2 &2 tgether, figured there must be a problem with them, and bought myself a spare from `Gordons of Bolton` the Ford dealer on the other side of the road. (One of the few dealers that`s still there today.) £8 I think. Should`ve bought a box full, but who knew?

£8, bargain. Didn't realise they must have been snapping even then. Been away from Capris for far too long, will be careful with mine.stevemarl wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 9:27 pm Every Capri you found, the sunroof winder had already gone so I put 2 &2 tgether, figured there must be a problem with them, and bought myself a spare from `Gordons of Bolton` the Ford dealer on the other side of the road. Cheers Andrew, save me looking for it . Think I'll give GWG a miss as well, think the novelty has worn off already.Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:30 pmDon't bother, it's not!Caprifan Rob wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:17 pm Haven't heard of Scrapyard Supercar Andrew, will give it a look if its worth watching.

Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
just because it's now exempt from an MOT
Like you Andrew caught the last 10 minutes of GWG. 44k for a Fiat 500
Drew (Mr original) painting a white car black and wanting to fit a Ducatti engine
Just because it's now exempt from an MOT, how bad is it that you can test drive a car that failed it's MOT a few years ago, and has sat in a garage deteriorating since
It was interesting to see the plates being made but no sign of the MOT repairs.
A Capri owner locally has black plates on his car which look great. Can't see the issue as long as the plates and font are the correct size and spacing. But guarantee it's only a matter of time until the rozzers stop you and lighten your wallet!!
Kindig Customs is a good watch on DMax. American as most shows are but some nice cars.
Scrapyard Supercar is well worth missingAndrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:30 pmDon't bother, it's not!Caprifan Rob wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:17 pm Haven't heard of Scrapyard Supercar Andrew, will give it a look if its worth watching.

Re: New Car Programme on TV Soon
A bit of a shocker!
It's makes you wonder though, if the team are such master mechanics/customisers/fabricators, why do they spend £15K on buying a decent car to butcher for their modifications? Why not buy a rotbox/ accident damaged car for peanuts and bring up to standard with their skills? Would that have brought the Fiat build in under budget and increased their profit margin, as they would have still sold the car for the £40K the buyer had budgeted for?
Better still, if I was the buyer, I would have taken the car straight to the EV specialists who supplied the parts and got the work done for half the price he had to pay to GWG. Plus, it looked much better as a standard car.
Andrew.
