Electronic ignition
Electronic ignition
Thinking of changing to electronic ignition. Looking for a bit of advice. Would it be best to change the full distributor or just change to a points module. I don't get any trouble from the points set up so not to sure if it would be beneficial to change to electronic.

Re: Electronic ignition
Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with a points set up - so long as you use a dwell meter to accurately set the points gap and make sure your ignition timing is spot on.
Problems can start if there is wear in the distributor shaft or bushes which is something electronic systems can overcome, to an extent.
Most people seem to say that the Aldon Igniter is one of the best systems.

If it's not broke don't fix it just carry spares in case,
I have used this type of electronic ignition on a couple of motors for folks with no problems, I got the kits they do with the replacement coil as well

Re: Electronic ignition
After recommendation I have this Aldon kit which just fits into the original distibutor so apart from the lack of a condensor pretty much keeps it looking fairly standard. So far I have had no issues wirh it and there is definantly a nicer tickover since I fitted it. Yep its quite alot more to pay than other similar kits but as Paul has said I too believe the quality of the Aldon is very good indeed and was strongly recommended to use the Aldon.

Re: Electronic ignition
I also have an Aldon kit that Paul helped me fit.. Only reason I fitted it was because I quite frankly got bored of adjusting the points and resetting the timing all the time
The Aldon kit isn't exactly cheap (£100-120) but hassle free once fitted, mine hasn't skipped a beat since and starts more or less first time

Re: Electronic ignition
Same here, though mainly through "if it works don't fix it". If I started having to re gap the points regularly, or if for some reason needed a new distributor, I'd probably go electronic, but for now they're fine. And a dying art!pbar wrote:You have answered your own post there I think Points get my vote also.Alanb67 wrote:I don't get any trouble from the points set up

I have used the Aldon kit many times. I think in fact it was myself that recommended it to Nick and others. Worth the extra. Avoid accuspark like the plague!

Yep it was indeed Dave that recommended the Aldon and as said its been great. I thought long and hard over replacing my points but after some great advice from Dave (SmokeEm) I decided to go for the Aldon that he recommended and I am very pleased that I did. Its great to get these recommendations from the likes of Dave as I would not have known of the Aldon kit. Nice one DaveSmokeEm wrote:I have used the Aldon kit many times.
