High insurance on daily! why?

Post by NaisiaN »

Decided to buy a little run around as winter is coming and dont want to be driving about in the capri in bad weather.
ive bought a 1996 5 door corsa for £230, thinking oh yeah brill it will be cheap (had a corsa years ago when i was 19).

Turns out the insurance i paid then as a fairly new driver is basically what people are quoting me now! £667 for the year im being quoted... im 27.. been driving 9 years with 6 years no claims. never claimed or had convictions etc etc... live in a decent area... seems incredibly unfair i have to pay that for being a careful driver.. my capri was 150 for the year with £7000 agreed valuation!

anyone have any suggestions to bring the quotes down?

That does seem high going off what you've said there. Perhaps just keep trying different companies, they do vary a lot, although I bet you've had a go at several by now. Other than that it's the same old things, have a lower restricted mileage, put a second driver on who may lower the premium, etc.

And don't use the online ones, phone them up for a quote, it's far, far easier to get them to lower it. In fact in all the years of driving I have only failed to lower the premium once.

It's odd that, in an age where there are now more mobiles phones than people, people are reluctant to actually use a phone!

cheers! yeah ive tried all comparison websites now and cant get it lower than that, will have to phone around... so daft for what it is. i think they should give us our money back if we dont claim by the end of the policy. why should they get to keep it if they havnt paid out! insurance companies are robbing *******!

As the car is a 1996, worth trying a classic policy.......

The government needs to grow a pair and ban whiplash claims altogether - genuine or not. Also claims management parasite companies should be banned too. Watch the premiums tumble then.

Insurance companies are a bunch of c**ts too though, I've last week pranged my Skoda and now my premium will go up despite having full protected no claims and not only that it will go up on the classic policies too as I have to disclose that I was in an accident. What's the point of having and paying extra for no claims protection.

Annoyed because I've got to notify them as another party was involved but if only was me I'd get a second hand wing and door for my car, spray them and put them on for a lot less than even the excess.

Naisia - yours is a lot of money for an old Corsa - my Nephew who is the same age as you has an 07 Vectra that I got for £600 for his wife to drive and he has to pay over £2000 for that. Ridiculous. It's not like he or you are 17 any more.

Do what I've been doing practically my whole driving life - buy a cheap car you thought you could never afford back in the day. i.e. 20-25yr old Merc/BMW/Jag etc - Insure it with a classic policy with mileage limit of 5000 - Waft around for the year with tax @ £20 a month and insurance no more than £150. If it breaks, buy another. My Merc before this one was over 70k new but only cost me 2k - never had a days trouble in 2 years until i sold it to move house. Good history is the key.

dam thats a good idea! id have done that but only wanted to spend around £300 tops for the car to get me through winter! .....Turns out anyway.. that the corsa i bought on ebay, the garage at chesterfield have cancelled the offer and said they only want cash and wont take a deposit over the phone and it will go to first person to come see it... so why put it on ebay? ... going to look at a peugeot 106 later for £250 instead! it is slightly cheaper on insruance but still comes in at £56 a month which is just ridiculous IMO

fully agree, could you not have spoken to other driver and just agreed to fix your own cars?.. they probably having same issues. I hate insurance companies, they will do everything to get out of paying aswell.

Thats ridiculous for somone my age. My sister who is 18 and who has just passed her test has been quote £900 fully comp for a couple year old audi a3 top of line sport version at like 190bhp or summet daft! how does that make sense!

Hi,

I've come to the conclusion that it's a scam. As you say, if you make a claim on your policy you get to keep your no claims entitlement, however, on renewal the premium will drastically rise anyway. Considering the cost of paying for it year after year when you never make a claim, what is the benefit of it?

I genuinely believe that insurance is a complete rip off theses days. They seem to just quote you the first number that comes into their head. They definitely don't want your business....they couldn't care less. It's because they know you have to insure somewhere if you want to drive your car, so there is enough business for every company to make money.

My crazy example..... I buy cheap cars for my daily driver and change them every 10months or so (bangernomics). To change car from Peugeot 406 diesel estate 1998 hdi 110hp worth £300 to a Peugeot 406 diesel estate 1999 hdi 90hp worth £300 additional premium is £97 + £25 admin fee, and that was only for 11 months as I'd renewed the policy 1 month earlier. Nobody, not even the insure could explain why. The best they could do was waive the admin fee. I explained that I had been quoted less elsewhere and, even with cancellation fees it would be cheaper for me to cancel the policy and start a new 12 month one with another company and they couldn't have cared less. It's what I did.

Strange. I have a Mazda 3 1.4 insured fully comp for £469. Iv been driving 13 years and 10 years no claims. Iv got my Mrs on the policy aswel and she only passed her test a few months ago.

Similar thing to 340truck though. Original company wanted near £1400. I told them my renewal price elsewhere and he basically called me a liar and told me to do one if I could get it for that price.

the name of my company is called 'only young drivers'
Try them pal. Sorted me out a treat
I KNOW MY CAR IS OLDER THAN ME......WHATS YOUR POINT???

I think that Peugeot make cracking small cars. Had a couple, they've been great.

You'd be surprised how much of a decent Merc can be had with a years ticket and £400...
