Didnt think this deserved its own topic in the Q&A section because i feel like its a bit of dumb question, but i want to buy some feeler gauges so i can stay on top of the tappets in my 2.0S, i tried adjusting them myself before but my feeler gauges only displayed in mm not thou hence why i ended up doing them wrong, or so i was told afterwards.
If i buy just a plain set of gauges that display in thou, will these be accurate or do i need something different?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about feeler gauges
I got a bluepoint set which have angled ends and are in thou and MM.
There is a formula for converting thou to MM but I can't remember it and I'm not that clever. I just use my converter app on my phone.
in the Haynes I think there is a section on converting measurements

Re: Question about feeler gauges
??? I tbought you could use a feeler gauge in metric as haynes does list them as follows for standard cam.
Inlet 0.2mm
Exhaust 0.25mm
Jimmy Ted from here did a great 'how to' you tube video and he uses a metric feeler gauge. Here it is

Sorry guys but am i missing sonething here ?

Re: Question about feeler gauges
Pinto Capri's are 8 thou inlet and 10 thou exhaust. In metric this is 0.20mm inlet and 0.25 exhaust.
As a crude rule of thumb if you have the clearance in thou eg 8 then roughly multiply it by two and a half 8 X 2.5 = 20.
Another example 12 thou = 12 X 2.5 = .30mm
25 thou for the plugs = 25 X 2.5 = .63 mm
16 thou for the points is 16 X 2.5 = .40mm.
Hope you get the picture. It is the same in reverse if you want to convert mm to thou eg 0.5mm is 5 divided by 2.5 = 20 (thou)
It's all based on the fact that 1 inch is just over 25mm (25.4)
I was stuffed at school because the first few years I was there I was taught in Imperial and they they changed it to Metric. Crap with both!
