Car storage

Post by Alanb67 »

Out of curiosity. Does everyone keep they're precious Capri"s in a garage under a dust sheet, or on the drive outside. The reason i ask is I saw a picture of a capri in another thread sitting on a driveway covered in a blanket of snow. Does anyone use the"re cars through the winter. I would be a nervous wreck if i used my car through the winter i think.

Hi Alan,
I keep my Sierra garaged and covered with old bed sheets when not in use, and SORN'ed from October 1st to April 1st.
Although some winter months can be dry, I wouldn't drive it anyway as not many car events around here, and it really only gets used for that purpose.

I take my hat off to anyone that uses their Classic Car all year round though :applaud:

They're braver than me.... :)

I keep my car covered in the garage with a stormforce cover. If you do this, it's important to take the cover off every now and again to let air get to the car. You'll read different opinions on keeping cars covered, but this method works well for me.
In saying that, if I had the space, I'd definitely invest in a carcoon instead.

Andrew.

If I had the space, I'd invest in another 70's/80's :ford:

I keep my car on the front and use it all year. Weather permitting of course! I'm actually going to be putting in my mother in laws garage this winter once I've cleared it out a bit. I'll still use it though!

My car has not been in the rain for almost 15 years so I believe but yes I was talking about this not so long ago on here about best way to keep my Capri top class over the winter months and it's going in the garage with mice traps and the window left open a inch and the battery disconnected with a full tank of petrol no handbrake on and will rock the car back and forth everyweek .
But back in the days my old Capri would love the snow deeper the better I think my Capri was a jeep or Land Rover in its previous life but one thing was the salt does eat away at them .

I will say if you bought a brand new mid range car let's say a Ford Focus for what £20k and drove that for 3 years it would be worth what £8k so you would have lost 12k

In my mind a good body respray is say 3-5k so you would save yourself 7k and drove the car that give you that grin we all have .

Hats off to you for using the car all year, i dont think i've got the bottle to do that. I actually keep my car under a car port with the cover over it. It seems to work ok.

Mine live under car ports. The 2.8 really only comes out in the summer but the 2.0 is used in winter, always has been - probably why it's not pristine

I have a council garage underneath the flats. It is secure and has an open, secure underground forecourt that the garages are situated in, which is useful for doing repairs without the confines of space, but yet undercover! Also, there is through airflow which is very helpful.

I do use the car through the winter but less frequently. In July for example it's been out on 10 days, in Jan/Feb it might be used 2-3 times in a month. I make a point of brushing and rinsing down the underside before putting the car away.

That's a great picture Peter, I like that a lot. I've driven mine a lot in winter too including ice and snow, isn't it great :)

Cars are on borrowed time anyway, like we are, so if there's fun and enjoyment to be had with driving it, then let's do it.

A Capri, or any other rear wheel drive, isn't much use around High Wycombe in the snow.

Couldn't agree with you more Paul, when I drove the capri to sixth from everyday it was a nightmare in the snow!!

Both of mine live outside on a driveway under a stormforce cover all year round, and I'll use it all year too. Don't care about taking it out in the rain or snow, as long as it isn't raining when I take the cover off I'll use it! Took it to work on Christmas Eve last year :drive:

The car is never winning any concourse awards so I just enjoy it!

I use mine everyday, no matter the weather just as you would a normal car.
They're designed to be used, nothings sadder than a beautiful car that never see's the road.

I think it's down to individual circumstances and capabilities. I keep mine garaged, and I never take it out in snow/ice due to salt. I don't have the kit, facilities or space to clean the underside afterwards and it would suffer after a while without doing that. I also don't have the money to get it welded when it would need it after all year round use for a few years. And I certainly don't have the skill or time!

Mine is just clean and honest, nowhere even close to concours, and I wouldn't want it to be. I want to keep it that way for as long as feasible, so I'll avoid winter use if salt is present. That said, I don't lose any sleep if I get caught in the rain. I regularly do 5+ hour round trips for work so I can't risk mechanical issues (thinks back to throttle cable snapping at 80mph on M60 a couple of months back), and being late for my line of work is never forgiven. I think too that being sat in jams on M6, M25 etc would end up with me getting pissed off and I want to associate my Capri with relaxed happy driving!

I don't subscribe to the view that only using it half the year amounts to not driving it or wasting it/life. It's still being used rather than being a museum piece paperweight. But serious thumbs up to anybody that is able to use theirs all year round. I suppose it's about staying on top of things.

Hi. What kind of cover do you use for your car and dors it suffer from condensation. I got one from halfords which seems ok. Someone told me the expensive covers dont work any better.
