My new project..... Warning non Ford content!

Post by sheff »

Bought this last weekend. It needs a bit of work, but hopefully it will turn out to be a good daily car for the winter when its finished.

Image

Off to a local body shop tomorrow to discuss a plan to get the paintwork up to scratch. Not thinking a full respray, but need to address some areas of rust and poor paintwork after years of neglect.

Had a few of these cars when I was younger and it made me smile when I got behind the wheel of one again :D I prefer RWD cars but this comes close and a lot less worrying to drive in the wet than the Capri!

All the best

Hi Neil,
NEVER driven a Golf......Thought about getting a GTI in the early 90's but never did.

Should be a good daily for you when sorted :) Keep the pics coming.

I'll post a few more pictures as the car progresses if there's some interest on here.

As you say a good daily driver and I'm thinking these cars are at rock bottom in value and can only go up now.

Cheers

Hi Neil.

That looks a really decent motor does that. Nice shape aint they. I never hidden my affection for Golfs. Being considering trading in the Fiesta (diesel) for a petrol and have been considering my first non Ford...ever ! Fancy a Golf GTi but a more recent model...maybe 2008 ish to keep the missus happy. Always liked the shape of Golfs

Good luck with your new project Neil. More pics would be great.

All the best mate

Nick

Ps. Just seen this mate....might be helpful if its the correct one

I like it Neil, please do keep the info coming on it's progress. Having owned a Golf (MK 4) for a decade or so, I could easily drop back into an earlier model, always enjoy seeing them passing by on the roads.

Nice one Nick, but it did actually come with one thanks

Late Golf GTI's are nice. I had considered getting one or a Focus ST when I was struggling to find a reasonable Mk2.

They seem to be getting a rare sight on the roads today Paul. I like the Mk4 shape but I'm a bit put off when I look under the bonnet :?

This is what I like to see. Nice and simple :D

Nothing on one of these cars I couldn't do myself. A timing belt change will take me roughly 30mins with basic tool kit. On my wife's Audi I allow myself a full day mainly due to the time it takes to remove everything around it to get to the thing :banghead:

All the best

Anyone popping on this thread will think they're on the wrong forum

I'm going to start stripping trims, bumpers etc off at the weekend, hopefully I wont find too many horrors lurking.
Three of the doors are rusty at the bottom and need painting. I'm hoping I can revive the rest of the car with a good mop and polish. I'll get some photo's taken at the weekend of what needs addressing and probably start an album in Flickr for people to view.

All the best

Hi Neil,
Very nice! 8-)
It's quite unusual being a 5 door GTi, and I think the big bumper models are the more desirable ones aren't they?
I look forward to seeing how the work you have planned progresses.

Andrew.

One of the world's great cars. I love em.
Firstly had a MK1 Gti, Mars red, then a graphite grey Mk2 Gti, followed by an Oak Green 16V. Also had a VR6, a MK3 16V and I bought a Mk4 V5 new in 2000.

Probably the best one was a little 1300 Mk2 which I bought for £500 to use while I went back to college as a Mature Student in 1996, used it for the 2 years I was there, put another 35000 miles on it then did it up and sold it for £1000!

In 2005 I went to buy a new Mk5 gti and the dealer said they were over £20K so I went and bought a Skoda Fabia VRS for £11,500 which is almost entirely VW, even down to it having the same steering wheel as the V5! It was a brilliant little car but a bit too small for me so I changed to an Octavia VRS which basically is a Golf Gti.

Getting another MK2 Gti is definitely on the list for me.

Its great to see engines like this Neil. Like you say very easy to work on. That alternator looks just as easy to change than mine on my Pinto...and that's easy ! Don't forget to soak that washer bottle in bleach now...and that VW Grill badge is crying out to be more 'highlighted' :) Jeepers I am getting very excited myself now Neil so much so that I am finding myself drawing up a 'to do' list

Look forward to seeing your engine detailing fella....no pressure

Great pics Neil. I was trying to think what this interior reminded me of recently...then I remembered...I took this pic on the bus stand other day after a storm.... :sorry:

Seriously though mate it really does look a lovely motor. Got character and charm. I see it also has a LCD display on the dash too so its got some 'modern' components then :) I drive past a specialist Golf spares shop every day on my bus. Always love looking at the Golfs parked up outside. One of the guys is forever waxing his car...don't understand why people get so obsessed with a tub of wax... .....

Mk2 GTI's are still relatively cheap and parts are readily available. Look what has happened to MK1's, don't leave it too long :D Even Mk3's are getting hard to find! That might be the next car I buy :D

I've got a Capri to polish Nick. This one will have to settle for a bucket of soapy water every now and then.

Good connection with the interior Nick. If you didn't know its called a Rainbow interior and IMO the only nice one they did. One of the things the car had to have.... as was BBS alloys and red paint.

Doesn't time fly Andy, bet you thought it was still a modern car. I think they introduced the MK2 in about 84 which would make early ones 33 years old now.....

At the moment I've got an N- reg Polo 1.4 Cl which I've sort of inherited from my 92 year old mum. She's had it from new and it's only got 29,000 miles on the clock and the original Dragon green paintwork that it left the showroom with. I will probably find somewhere to keep that when I get rid of some of my fleet as I can't bring myself to sell it.

If you had a 2.8 you'd look at the header tank first, which is what I did and decided at that point to buy the car :D

Hi

Nice project, I'm working on my 3dr 8v mk2 Gti it's G reg big bumper in dark blue met, all original with steel wheels.
Had it 5 years and only broke down once when the fan belt disappeared in the rain - no engine tray so water gets round the pulleys and slipped off!

The heater matrix leaked on mine recently hopefully it hasn't blown the head gasket, car was only on for half an hour and only went to local garage to pump the tyres up....but we'll see when I get it going again.
I'd recommend you change yours for peace of mind ( weakness on mk2s) you don't want boiling water on your feet, plus you can upgrade them to the stronger mk3 matix!
Both my doors have rust on the bottoms as well, you can buy repair panels for them from vw heritage (and most parts including interior fabric).

Although the floors are galvanised the front chassis members can be vulnerable so I'm messing about treating the engine bay and repainting the valve cover etc.

They like to be used, real fun to drive so thinking of using it again although I thought about selling it to put funds towards my Capri.

If I didn't love capris I'd probably go the whole hog with the golf...or the classic mini.
I'm interested to see the new Up Gti coming out next year.

Sorry for the long reply but good luck with your project.

Nice to know there's other GTI owners on this Forum :)
I'll check out the heater matrix, I have a pile of receipts to go through so its possibly been done at some point. And one of the chassis legs is starting to look a bit rusty on mine. I'm hoping I have caught it early and its not too serious.

Please post a picture of the wheels you have... I'm thinking about getting a set of steels for the winter months.

All the best
Neil
