When did K&N air filters become so expensive?

Just been looking around to maybe buy one for my 2.0 S and im seeing old forum posts from only a few years ago and they talk about how you can buy one for only £40 or so, yet now they all seem to be £80+ on eBay and Burtons!!
Why on earth have they become so expensive??
Not sure i'll bother with one now as it just doesn't seem worth it.

Funny Your doing the same as me , I drove 12 years with out one in my old Capri on the normal system but the price is well over the top , I might get myself a alpine dab radio that will go in the glove box and put the £80 towards that .

Yeah it seems stupidly expensive for what you're getting and you certainly don't gain that much performance wise either. I can also think of better things to spend that much on.
