Ford lock barrels question...

Post by Major_Tom »

Hello everyone. My girlfriend bought herself a MK4 Escort last year. She's just insured it... and lost the only key. We've searched everywhere, but its not turning up.

I am wondering if:

1) Does anyone happen to have a lock set for a MK4 Escort / Orion

2) If not, what other Ford locks will fit do we think? With minimal hassle.

They are power locks.

Any advice greatly appreciated as she's very down about it all and the poor Escort needs attention.

Thanks!

Is it a Tibbe type lock - the one with a key with a series of angular cuts in it?

I'm pretty sure you can buy pick guns quite cheaply for them, which will give you the code, which any good locksmith can then cut a key from.

That's probably a fair bit easier than fitting new locks, unless security is a concern - those keys aren't particularly secure, anyway.

I've got these Tom, two locks and ignition barrel on the same key but I don't know what they are from. No boot lock. Not 'power locks' though.

Those in the picture are called Chubb locks. The ones with little angles cut into a rod type are the tibbie keys.

Assuming you can still get into the car and that the car originally only had one key to work everything then get the boot lock and the glovebox lid lock (if it has one) as these will be the least worn locks. Any good locksmith should then be able to make a key to work the locks.

If these are like the tibbie keys each of the little plates in the lock will have a number on it and the locksmith should be able to work out the key number from that but I wouldn't advise taking a lock apart yourself unless you really know what you are doing.

As for the central locking, the actual door locks are the same;- when you turn the key it lifts a rod that directly unlocks a manual lock or activates the locking solenoids on a central locking model.

Hi Tom,

Some excellent advice already given mate. Good Luck with getting it sorted and putting a smile back on your girlfriends face :)

Tom if you dont go down the "getting a key made up" have a peek at this. Not cheap but its a complete set with two keys and seller is open to offers.....

Hope you can get a key sorted like the chaps have advised.

All the best

Nick

Thanks for the advice guys.

Yes, they are the tibbie locks.

Thanks Peter! BUt I fear they aren't the right type.. I did find these though which seem to be the ones:

...and might try them. Patterned cheap lock barrels... good price though.. if they fit.. and work.

No can't get into the car either! Women are interesting beasts.

Thanks a lot for the replies and advice, will let you know how it goes.

If the car is locked try removing the weather strip from the drivers door glass then getting a length of rod with the end bent into a hook down in there. It is a bit like fishing but if you can get the hooked end over one of the rods down there it may be just enough to open the door or trip the central locking to open it.

Failing that a flat blade or strip of steel about 1/2" wide with a notch cut in the bottom pushed down between the glass and the door may hook on one of these rods and open the door.

Are you or your other half in the AA or RAC, they will open it for you.

Regarding women, my late dad once said to me "Son, if you can understand a women you are f**king mad yourself!" So true!

Funnily enough there was a car locksmith type van and guy sorting someone out in my local Aldi car park the other day. Apparently he opens the car for you and provides duplicate keys. Might be an option just to call out someone like that?

When the chap came to pick up my Mk4 XR3i a few years ago, I opened the car, put keys in ignition, popped the bonnet, shut the door, reconnected the battery and the central locking activated with both sets of keys in the car :banghead: :wank:

Called my breakdown who used plastic wedges to prise the top of the door open and a stiff piece of wire to get to the inside door lock...Took a while and nearly £60

Always keep the keys in my pocket now....Lesson learned

Any mobile locksmith will sort it for you.....near to us and very very good is "LOCKFORCE" he's based in Finchingfield. He did my Fiesta a couple of years ago for £15o but that included a key with the correct chip in it to start the car, the Escort doesn't have that so it will probably be cheaper.

If it has central locking, you could always try the old myth of smacking half a tennis ball....... :spank:
