The glue used to set around the top and then the rubber went brittle - or was that just me being hopeless as a kid

Re: Who Remembers?
I remember my little brother stabbing a vegie knife thru his palm whilst opening a new bottle ( my Dad had a big office with a stationary room so we had a good supply ) blood everywhere , him screaming like a banshee, yeah , they were good times ( he's a lawyer now). You used to have to poke a knife into the recess on the nozzle to get the glue out .

Mail order catalogues, good one Nick. Must have spent many a happy hour looking through them, at the toys I mean! I remember the Littlewoods and Marshall Ward ones well.

Great photos Paul. Now this really brings back memories. The toy section. I remember loving browsing through the bicycle section ( after the lingerie ) as and I remember buying a bmx from Littlewoods or Kays and paying it off a few quid a week for about 2yrs

I used to enjoy the bikes sections too. Looking at those pics it makes you realise that bikes back then, just like cars, had various styles and take-a-chance fearless designs.

Re: Who Remembers?
I was meccano mad , every week Mum would take me to Whitcombe & Tombs and I was allowed 2 things .....usually brass gears ,as I was into making gearboxes. I started with set 4 and then every birthday and xmas I got the whole next set ( not just the conversion set ) and the grandies bought me extras......for being a good boy ( what a gullable bunch of suckers , ....really miss them now tho ). I still remember my Dad stunned in disbelief as I showed him my 4 speed and reverse gearbox.......I was about 7 or 8

Re: Who Remembers?
My dad bought me a huge Meccano set when I was about 7. It is in two large boxes about 2' X 18" X 6" and is housed in my grandad's WW1 Merchant Navy sea chest. The Meccano is mostly 1940's and 1950's stuff in it and most of it has never been used. I just wasn't interested in it and I preferred making (badly) airfix kits.

Re: Who Remembers?
I was crap at airfix kits too , seemed to get glue everywhere. I was better with balsa.....coz they usually required an engine , usually Cox glow motors and quickstart diesel .

Re: Who Remembers?
Yes I remember all those catalogues, especially Mums Great Universal
Didn't really like Meccano, found it too fiddly with instructions and never had the patience (All these years later nothing has changed)
Did plenty of Airfix planes though
