Bloody awful.......All cars look the same now.
I remember when the Sierra came out in 1982 and everyone said it looked like a Jelly Mould  30 years on and pre '82 cars look
so outdated....... but still far superior IMO :D

Fair play though, (and car design politics aside) those adverts are well thought out and funny! I loved the 'lane discipline one' ha ha!

My Uncle Pete had a canary yellow Viva in the early 80's, and I remember being amazed at the flat speedo 'bar' on the dash!

Happy days!

Mike.

The Probe almost went off down that path didn't it..... until popular opinion deemed otherwise!

Hi All,
I like the way that the photos on Vauxhall's website show a Viva with "New Viva" on the registration plate. Just in case somebody confuses it with the old car! :)

The Rover 3500 had one like that. My Dad always wanted one of those ('but with the money to go with it'). I always head for those at car shows.

The Cougar was closer, wasn't it?

Absolutely it was - a mate of mine had a V6 Cougar and I always thought it was a lovely car, but I'm almost sure that the whole 'new Capri' headline went to Probe at its launch and yet wasn't mentioned with Cougar - which you rightly say would be a bit more like it at least!

Hi Gents,
Pleasure is all mine. From what I remember, it was a tad optimistic to have the speedo calibrated to 120MPH! :)

Hi Mike,
One major flaw with either of those cars being hailed as a successor to our beloved Capri. Wrong driven wheels.
The public would have saw through Ford's claim of the Probe being the "new Capri", and probably didn't want to risk the are of the purists a second time.

Personally, I think that the Cougar is quite a pleasant looking car, nothing brilliant though, but perhaps it will be appreciated more in future years?

All the best,
Andrew.

Ah - but don`t forget they did do a 2300 engined version - with twin Strombergs! I`d imagine that could`ve topped 110?

Steve,
The Firenza/ Magnum 2300 supposedly topped 120MPH. Maybe it had a different speedo fitted, calibrated to a higher amount.

Andrew.
