Engine Choices

Post by ThatGuy »

right so I've been planning on doing an engine swap on the slut and i thought i had it pretty much thought through, until i had a rethink and now im not sure which direction to go in. Basically my plan was to chuck in a modernish engine with more power and make it abit better to be able to dive as a daily as i miss the attention i used to get where ever i went when she was my daily :)

So im looking for some guidance really whether you've done it yourself or seen someone do it.

So then my options are sr20det/ca18det i know a few people have done these and they do have good out the box power and from what I've heard don't take a whole lot of fab work to get in and running.

and the other is a zetec (probably turbo'd at some point) I've seen it done in a few capris so i know its doable but other than that i haven't seen a whole lot about them other than the finished product.
So what are peoples thoughts, on whats going to be good for power, how much work is needed to get it all to fit and all that sort of stuff

sorry for the rant but im at a loss trying to figure it out for myself :p

Not done any myself, but have been reading up on them. Zetec is probably easiest, as you can already get most of the bits you need to do it. CA18DET is meant to be a cracking engine, plenty of power etc, and has been done on at least two Capris that I know of. Iirc there's some issues with the steering rack, can't remember the details fully though nor how it was resolved.

From what I've seen and read most part required for a zetec swap you can get off the shelf, or adapt a type 9 and things of that nature.
as you said I've seen a few people use the ca18 but that makes me wonder why not go for the sr20? it's pretty much the same engine from what I've read apart from being a 2.0 instead of a 1.8.
I am still swaying towards a ca18 or sr20 for some reason but don't want to get myself into and endless project so I can never drive my capri again :/

SR20's are bloody lovely engines, I bought a standard 200sx in january and I couldnt belive how much it pulls unmodified. My mates 14 is also the fastest car I've ever been in. a capri spitting flames and turbo chattering would be lovely indeed.
Since I got a capri I've said "over the moon" a lot more than ever before.

Hence my thoughts for going down the sr20 or ca18 route, as standard they put out a fair amount of power. Plus I know the ca18 swap has been done nick on capripower is still building his as a drift car and a few others have done it aswell, but my only thought is in assuming to do the swap as easily as I can in need a donor car which could end up costing abit of money and everyone and there dog wants an s13/14 at the minute :/

I think you can pick up a ca cheap still but thats cause when drifters up the power on the cheap they usually develop a bottom end knock.

Well I rent a garage next to lots of drifters so thats why I used to get offered them a lot. They've disappeared now sadly or I'd put the word out for you.

For me I would get a 2.9efi cologne in it for peanuts then turbo it!

Check out TOP BOSS performance for what can be achieved for £££

My mate has a 2.9 on TB's and its over 210bhp

SmokeEm ideally I don't want to go for anything bigger than a 2.0 as I drive a fair amount to get to work so it would end up being as thirsty as my pinto as much as I would love a v6.
And 3litre I'm still debating on whether to go turbo zetec or ca18det so I think I'm still going to be deciding for a while before I can make my mind up :p

I know what you are saying but I get 9mpg with my 2.9efi than either my old Pinto Cortina OR even 7 more than my wifes daily 2.0 Honda Accord. It's the torque that keeps down the high consumption. I do have a 3.09:1 Capri diff though.

I think for power:fuel consumption I'm best sticking with something under 2.0 but if I did go zetec route which would be the best one to go for? I know there are a few different types of them (or so I thought) but which is best in everyones opinion?
