Gullwing doors look very impressive, but they really don't work in the real world!

Also, why'd you need to replace the Capri, you can't improve on perfection ;)

Needs to look more like a Capri. Not enough nods to the original design.

This one looks more like a Capri...

Hi,

I'd also like to see an updated Capri re-introduced, although I fear it would just be a watered down version of the car we know and love. It would probably be too heavy and too sterile to ensure it conforms to modern safety and comfort standards. And front wheel drive.

I'd love to be proved wrong on this.

Apparently Ford insist that a modern day Capri would not sell in sufficient numbers to make the project viable. I'm surprised at this as these days most manufacturers seem to produce many niche models that don't appear to have mass-market appeal.

Ford don't even think a 3 door Focus is viable!

I don't think it will ever happen to be honest which is a good thing IMO. As above, it will not be a Capri (think new Mini).

Plus we are getting the Mustang next year anyway! :ford:

Hi,

I think that if we do see a new design Capri, it will only be a Capri in name. Although to be fair, Ford did a good job of updating a classic design with the recent GT, but it's in a different league in terms of the price.

As you've raised the subject of the Mini, I don't think that the original 'new' Mini was bad looking for what it is. Then BMW introduced the Clubman, Countryman, Coupe and Paceman. All of which fall into the category of "what were they thinking?". :turd:

You really don't mate. I saw a design on a site once ill see if I can find it. It looked hidious. Like the scirocco. The old ones look great the new ones just look the same as every other car of today.

The capri can be left as an 80s icon and not given a crap modern look imo

Hi,

I'm talking about a car that essentially looks the same as 'our' Capri, but with updated mechanical components. It will never happen though.
Personally I wouldn't buy one, as I like the Capri for what it is. Just because I wouldn't buy one, it doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to see a modern Capri sold as an alternative to all the modern junk on our roads. By junk I mean not aesthetically pleasing, over-styled and with fussy detailing.
Not many modern cars have 'clean' styling these days.

I don't think that I'd like them to make a modern Capri, there is always a danger that it will dilute the legend of the original. In the same way a film sequel often lessons the quality of the brilliant first film.

Hi,

Personally I disagree with the comment that a revamped modern Capri will dilute the legend of a car that was last produced nearly thirty years ago. The redesigns of the Beetle, Ford GT and Mini have not done so with their respective originals.

Maybe back in '69 people were saying the same about the soon to be introduced Capri diluting the image of the Consul Capri. We're glad they did it now!

Then I agree with u mate. An 80s body on new mechanics would be good. I think they would sell pretty well. I can't stand modern cars. They all look the same and have no sex appeal either.

Not what I seen some people do on a documentary once lol. No cars today look good. Old cars do. Capri, mustangs and trans ams all look great. They are cars and look sexy like a bored housewife lol.

:agree:

If the price was kept around the £20-£25K mark I imagine that it would sell quite well. There are few rear wheel drive coupes in this price bracket, I can only think of the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ.

For me, as I've said above, the detailing is too fussy on modern cars. Examples are those squared-off wheel arches as found on the Peugeot 308 amongst others, those stupid looking things at the bottom of the doors on a Renault Clio, and weird shaped head and tail lights that don't seem to match the styling, as found on a lot of cars these days.

Unfortunately, you've been living in your Seventies bubble for too long! £20K doesn't go very far towards a new sports car these days.
Examples of coupes at this price or higher include:
Hyundai Veloster £23,045
Mazda MX5 £23,425
Mini Coupe £27,505
Renault Laguna Coupe £31,222
Vauxhall Astra GTC £27,045

These are list prices of the highest specification models, not including optional extras. Quite an eye-opener!

That is just not true. Sometimes I extend into the early 80's.

Steve,

Spot on!!

I specifically chose those cars to illustrate my point that a Capri, in terms of aesthetics, would not have much by way of competition.
