look whats back on ebay

Post by Fordoholic Nick »

Hi. Cant believe it. Look what is back on ebay for sale due to a timewaster who could not pay for it....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Capri-La ... 20ec19ce01

Andew put the original thread up when he noticed this. Caused a bit of interest here due to the price it "sold" for...not !!! Now its up again at a higher starting price. I cannot understand how someone can bid on something as fantastic as this without the means to pay for it :?

Wonder how much interest it will get this time around. Still looks as beautiful as it did before...will keep an eye on it again. Hope the sellers find a proper buyer for it. What a waste of time for them.

All the best

Nick

There is more to it than that. Some skullduggery going on I should think.

Nick,
It does look like a stunning car. However, as pbar hinted at, there could have been some shenanigans with shill bidding in the auction, although I am not suggesting that is what has happened in this case.

It's common practice on auction websites for a seller to list an item at a low start price to entice bidders. That is perfectly legitimate and is a very useful sales technique.
However, if the item looks like it might sell for a figure lower than the seller feels that it is worth, under another identity the seller will get the price bid up to what they actually want to sell it for.
Another often used technique to watch for is the seller placing a high bid in order to reveal the maximum bid price of a potential buyer. This high bid will then be retracted, and another identity used to bid the auction up to the genuine potential buyer's maximum bid.
Both these actions are against auction rules but, remember, the more an item sells for the more revenue the auction sites obtain in sellers fees.

Another possibility is that the buyer went to buy the car after the end of the auction and reneged on the deal because the car was not as described, hence the relisting.

There is also the chance that the buyer was a genuine timewaster who bid on the car in the heat of the (drunken?) moment, only to regret their actions in the cold (sobering?) light of day.
I can assure you there are one or two timewasting buyers on auction websites who bid on items with no intention whatsoever of actually paying for it.

Whatever has happened here is a shame as I really do think that the car looks to be a good 'un from the pictures. Obviously, only a thorough check, including investigating the missing history will help to reveal the full story of this car.

I imagine that there aren't many buyers out there willing to splash out £7500 on a Capri, so the fact that the car has been relisted, for whatever reason, will have made many potential owners question whether the car is as it should be, and in their minds this may have had an adverse effect on it's value.

Wow, what a long post, I'm going for a lie down..........

Andrew.

It's been on as a classified listing at £7,500 since it ended last time, as I wrote on the other thread, you could see the bidding was being shilled...
Oh, go on then, while I'm in the mood let's have a bit of a look at the listing for the last auction, and the bids placed on it...

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... 7675.l2565

If you click on the usernames on the left you'll see when they bid, and in roughly what increments, now if you want to have your mates bid on an item you use a "private auction", it hides bidders identities, but now Ebay make it even easier, as they automatically scramble all bidders names, so private auctions are for the naughty sellers who haven't cottoned on yet to the fact that it's glaringly obvious what they're doing, so probably best avoided unless you're desperate for that part!

So, this auction isn't private, good start, and as anyone who bids regularly at auction on Ebay will tell you, it's always best to bid in the last minute or so, to avoid driving the price up (unless the seller has a friend a friend to do that for you of course).

So, up to 3 grand all is normal, nothing to see here, then one bidder takes over and pushes the bid from there to 6 grand, not in one go, but with 8 bids, all placed when the auction had 9 days left to go on 20-Aug-14 19:27, now, these weren't automated bids going in upto his limit, they were all placed a few seconds apart, and it reads like this....

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £6,000.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:51 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £5,800.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:47 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £5,600.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:40 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £5,400.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:35 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £5,200.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:32 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £5,000.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:25 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £4,500.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:17 BST

y***o ( 216Feedback score is 100 to 499) £4,000.00
20-Aug-14 19:27:06 BST

So rather than place a maximum bid with 9 days to go this bidder was so panicked when their first bid didn't get them as high bidder they bid between 5 and 8 seconds apart until they were, and their bid was doubled from 3-6 grand

Then you have their bid history...

Bid activity (%) with this seller: 61%

Category No. of Bids Seller Help Last Bid Help

Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles > MG 1 Seller 1 9d 21h
Business, Office & Industrial > Ice-Cream Machines 1 Seller 2 9d 19h
Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles > Porsche 1 Seller 3 4d 23h
Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles > Ford 8 Seller 4 9d
Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles > MG 1 Seller 5 6d 22h
Coins > British 1 Seller 6 2d 2h

So, their normal pattern it would appear is to bid once on an item, but this one got 8 bids within 6 seconds 9 days before auction end

Then we have the winning bidders 30 day history...

Bidder Information
Bidder: p***u ( 187Feedback score is 100 to 499)
Feedback: 100% Positive
Item description: Ford Capri Laser - Original, low miles, 16 year storage Barnfind Timewarp Mint
Bids on this item: 1

30-Day Summary
Total bids: 1
Items bid on: 1
Bid activity (%) with this seller: 100% Help
Bid retractions: 1
Bid retractions (6 months): 3

So, they've only bid on this one item in the last 30 days, not unusual, but look at the bid retractions in the last 6 months, very indecisive, or just finding out what the high bid id then retracting your bid so you don't end up with final value fees on the car you never purchased from yourself/your mate?

Once again, call me cynical...
Is now a good time to mention their "timewarp Fiesta"?

Totally original, 11,000 miles barnfind, but wait, it's had a full repaint, that would make it restored then, not "in timewarp condition", and waht a bargain at £11 grand.

I agree Andrew, it's a shame because anyone following this car may now be thinking it's a wrong 'un when (on face value) it appears the opposite is true.

I'm just waiting for that Bronze GL to resurface again!........
