Post by Andrew 2.8i »

Hi,
Spotted on Ebay. It looks like a gem, I wonder what the final sale price will be?

Wow Andrew,

What a simply superb example of a Laser. Never thought i would see one selling for 2.8i prices but this one is so perfect and original its no wonder its hit the £6000+ with 19 bidders already. Love the colour too. Uncracked dash i presume, original radio, perfect condition interior........

And that service history has to be as best as it gets. How many stamps have they got !

A loving couple who have cherished their capri to bits over the years and it shows :)

Will watch this to see how it ends...

All the best

Nick

Nick,
I agree with you about the condition. The dealer supplied plates, the last tax disc and perfect original shelf would seemingly back up the seller's mileage claim. Interesting to note that twelve months tax was only £150 in 1998.

I wonder who owns all the other interesting old Fords in that workshop, as the seller doesn't have any other cars for sale.

Hi Andrew,

What a workshop this fella has, like you pointed out.

This reminds me of a little place that used to be down near Southend on Sea. Was called "Days of Grace" and the chap who owned it just sold classic fords from a little showroom on London Road...Went there a couple of times to check out his capris...ended up buying one from him :)

But he is no longer there....shame.

Wonder if this guy selling this Laser does something similar maybe ? Like you pointed out mate it does look like he has a few nice Fords don't it. That fiesta looks mint, and love the Cortina too.

I reckon that those that are bidding on this Laser surely must have viewed it first...Mrs F would flip if I bid over £6000 on a car I had only seen advertised on ebay ...actually come to think of it she would flip on any old ford I bid on even if I did go and view it first

All the best

Nick,
It would be a nice day out just spending time in that workshop poking around and test driving the cars. If only! :)

Talking of which, I missed this one for sale, but Quentin Willson mentioned this beauty in the paper the other day. I had to look it up!:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STUNNING-1972 ... 2ed568ef6f

This seller sells a lot of low-mileage classics. It's the same person that originally sold the gold Capri that we talked about on here a few months ago. The one that sold for around £12K and kept mysteriously re-appearing for sale around the country.

Hi Andrew,

I would so love to put a Bid in on this, but just no where to keep it and I'd probably ruin it with a 2Lt etc. But what an absolute cracker, you dream of finding cars like this and when you do, you've already Bloody got one. :banghead:

I recon the Bidding war will start towards the end....

cheers,

John.....

Andrew, I checked in on it myself tonight. 21 bids now with 2 days remaining...mate I reckon it will go over £7000. Who would have thought that for a Laser of any model... but suppose the retro ford scene has been getting a lot of attention last couple of years, and examples like this one don't come up for sale too often I suppose.

John, sounds like you already got plans for this one mate. Whatever you do don't watch the final few hours of this auction with a six pack stella... You might wake up the morning after to see an email from ebay congratulating you on your "purchase" albeit a fantastic one at that :)

Have bought a lot of things myself on ebay under the influence but nothing anywhere near £7000 fella.....

All the best guys

nice one peers thanks for sharing this. its an absolutely stunning capri laser probably one of the best ive seen for stunning and original. one of my capri mates barry has a 1984 nimbus grey 2.0 laser with just 19,000 on the clock genuine which is another unmolested time warp capri. hes won a lot of trophies with it its even got its original good year gran prix tyres on which are still in good condition. its amazing how the seats are so mint on this laser there like new and we all know how bad the laser truro 2 seats are for wearing. its defiantly a time warp piece thats going to fetch a lot of money. when you get in this capri you will defiantly have to play huey lewis and the news "back in time" :)

Hi,

Judging by the condition of the car from the pictures, I think the new owner should be very pleased with their purchase. The car looks ready to show and to win awards straight away.
I think that it's a good genuine car, the likes of which don't come up for sale very often.

Nick,
I predict £7250 there or thereabouts.

Hi Andrew,

Incredible car for an incredible price fella....especially as its usually the higher spec models (2.8i, 3.0s etc) that tend to "seduce" this sort of money from potential buyers.

I know that Lasers tend not to fetch such a price so its great to see this one has really got the appreciation it truly deserves. Cant believe the number of really decent Lasers I seen for sale for less than £4000. But suppose its the demand that fuels the purchase price. Whereas before it was always the higher spec Capris fetching the interest, maybe the Laser is now appealing more to future Capri ownership...about time too... ;)

Hey I wonder if this Laser will make an appearance at Brooklands. Be great to see it.

Andrew,

Just seen this mate.

I love the RS2000. What a simply superb car. The price as incredible as it is does not surprise me one bit to be quite honest. And the work its had done... Don't know when the last time was that I saw one driving around, minding its own business ! You just don't, do you, except at classic car shows. They really are becoming (or should I say already are) extremely rare cars now, and very well kept, and very well hidden away for precisely this reason.

My first car was a Ford Escort Mk2 1.3 Popular. What a lovely car. The power was unbelievable but not in the way I would want it to be unbelievable

But for me personally the Capri always always tugged at my heart strings just that bit more.....

All the best

Hi Nick,

Me too. There's a lot of other cars on this forum that I'm excitedly waiting to see in the flesh.... :)

I've had a think about this and, of course, you're right. A good Mk2 RS2000 Escort is rarely seen out in the wild, but often make an appearance at classic car shows. It's a shame that they have to be squirrelled away and only used on the road infrequently.
I occasionally see a Mk1 or Mk2 Escort driving around these parts, but that's because they are still popular with the clubman rally lads in this area and the condition of those cars reflects that. I've only seen the one RS2000 though.

Fordoholic Nick wrote:But for me personally the Capri always always tugged at my heart strings just that bit more.....
Same for me, and luckily tugged at the purse strings that little bit less than the Escort....... :)

All the best,
Andrew.

But when did you last see ANY Mk2 Escort? I`ve not seen any (on the road) for years, if not decades.

edit: just checked `How Many Left` and assuming 1975 > 1980, there are 42 left on the road...

Good prediction on the price Andrew, can you help me with lottery number predictions ?!
Been watching this myself, what a stunning car, lasers always looked good, this can only help their popularity.

Steve,
Thanks for taking the time to check on the survival figures for the RS2000.
While I agree that the Mk2 Escort RS2000 is a rare sight on the roads, the figures from how many left didn't seem to be plausible so I double checked...

Using your assumed dates from '75 to '80 I added up the individual years to a total of 83. Bear in mind that the figures displayed are from the fourth quarter of 2013, so some of the cars on SORN are likely to come out to play in the summer, the potential maximum number of cars still alive is 243.
Some of the cars on SORN are more than likely destined to never to hit the road again, I would reasonably expect the true figure to be somewhere between these figures. Still not an awful lot.
As you say, Mk2 Escorts are scarce and by adding up the total figures there are 1314 on the road, but again assuming some are on SORN for the winter there are a potential maximum of 4442 cars.
Freelanderfan wrote:what a stunning car, lasers always looked good, this can only help their popularity.
It's nice to see the 1.6 reaching the kind of money that most people assume is reserved only for the larger engine variants. It just goes to show that a well presented car and a bit of sales flannel can work wonders! I've noticed that sellers who go to the trouble of emphasising the history (or creating a story, depending on opinion) often achieve a higher final selling price than the sellers who stick to the facts.

Andrew, what did I do wrong, `cos my figures were much lower? I searched `Escort` then looked at the YOM 75 - 80, but I just got single figures for each year? Thought it was low?

Steve,
There's quite a difference in figures, isn't there? When I searched for Escort RS2000 I returned miniscule figures, so I suspected there was something wrong.
Instead, I clicked on A-Z index > Ford > Escort > RS 2000 (note the space) and produced these results:
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/f ... anufacture

And for Ford Escort total figures:

A-Z index > Ford > Escort > View all Ford Escort Models combined

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/fo ... anufacture

I would imagine that these figures are more realistic.

Andrew.

Edit:
Steve, I suspect that if you search for 'Ford Escort' cars registered only as 'Ford Escort', i.e. the base model appear in the search results.
