CAT Anti Corrosion System.
Hi,
I've just come across this interesting advert in a 1994 magazine for the CAT Cathodic Anti Corrosion System. Did anyone buy one back in the day? For sure, there's some bold claims being made in the advert!
I think that this type of system is used on oil rigs and suchlike, but I thought it needed the presence of a sacrificial metal to work effectively.
A flash in the pan? Too good to be true? Probably, although it's interesting to note that the company is still trading and still selling them!

I remember this advert back in the day but never met anyone who used it . Think if it was any good all new cars would have it. Then again perhaps it did work a bit too well and they were paid off to make it disappear ha ha. Imagine how many people make a living out of rusty cars!!!
Re: CAT Anti Corrosion System.
Yes, it does. Galvanised metal works in this way; zinc being more electronegative than iron????peers.dupp wrote:but I thought it needed the presence of a sacrificial metal to work effectively.
(OK - this is dredging up A level chemistry from xxxyears ago, sorry if it`s not 100%...)
I believe ships have/had sacrificial anodes, magnesium & zinc spring to mind? As for the blurb i9n the ad, sounds like a load of crap tbh. What a shame though!

Re: CAT Anti Corrosion System.
Remember this coming up a few years back. From what I recall, i think it needed to be either submerged in water, or have a current running through it (or both?) to be effective? Don't quote me on it as it really is just a vague recollection!

Probably best not to try it on the car in that case!-JC- wrote:i think it needed to be either submerged in water

Most metal urinals use this tech to stop corrosion. Next time you take a piss just look for the block of zinc

Probably not, but worth every penny as it eradicates rust and increases resale values.

Yes fella. All boats should be fitted with these "sacrificial anodes" and they were magnesium and zinc just as you said.
They still sell them in any good Yacht Chandlers.
I used to work in a Yacht Chandlers and we sold loads of these. Even sold small shaft anodes that bolted onto the prop shaft of the outboard engines hanging off the stern of the boat to protect that as well.
