Why mechanics as a job don't interest me

Hi all.

The past week works been dead and they are still on about that theft incident I thought I had sorted but not good enough for them it seems. So to take my mind off I have been down my mechanic mates learning a few things. He has an old ford pop that's a wreck and he is rebuilding it to be as original as possible. So I been helping and learning and really enjoying myself.

Until we had a range rover in. We did the air suspension on it and all went ok till it was computer time. Had to measure everything manual and then enter the details. Then the car had a fit going up and down, then measure again etc and it went on and on taking all fun out of the job.

Why can't they just keep technology away?

Because nobody wants to pump the suspension up with a foot pump next to the clutch. It would take all the fun out of poncing around with fancy suspension.

Don't even get me started on bulb changing, how hards that got?

Vauxhall I had the air box out, Megan's you take the wheel off and some fiats you take the bumper off. Why?

I agree with you on that mate. My mrs asked why don't I do a course on mechanics? But I wouldn't learn what I want to. I don't want a computer to tell me what's up with a car and then just change a sensor so it works again.

I agree with you on that mate. My mrs asked why don't I do a course on mechanics? But I wouldn't learn what I want to. I don't want a computer to tell me what's up with a car and then just change a sensor so it works again.

Where I work we don't have any off that fancy computer stuff, it's just multimeters and brains.. No computer involved, I guess were the odd ones out lol

Fucking hate the word 'technician'.

I got called a technician in work the other week, I turned around and told the bloke I didn't spend £14,000 on an engineering degree to be called a technician. Then I went back to getting paid £6.34 an hour to drink coffee and watch YouTube.

Real mechanics still exist main dealers are techies so to speak.

As there are a lot of us who refuse to own a new car (give me millions i'd still rather have a Hilux
mark 3 or 4 over a new range rover)
mention ECU and I really don't want to know.

I don't know if he is still there but there is/was a guy on Mersea island Essex who is the go to guy for yank tanks-nothing he didn't know on them even has to "hear" some engines to tune them.

In my eyes, a mechanic is someone who can diagnose the problem, take something apart and fix it using minimal or no new parts, not randomly throw parts at it on the basis of a fault code, until it works again.

You hear banded about on this forum "my mechanic has looked at this problem" in reality they have probably forgotten what to do with a real car... That's if they even worked on one at all.

I hate it when they change parts due to fault codes then more parts when it then throws up a different fault code. They expect to charge you for all the parts they have changed when it was just a crank sensor. I tell them to put the original parts back on that weren't faulty. I remember getting a cavalier hooked up to a diagnostics machine (£50) only then to be told by the "technician" that it could be this, this, this or this. Oh and you might need a new one of these. I asked him plainly "Do you know what is wrong with it?" and he said "No" I could have paid anyone £50 to tell me that. Turned out someone had split a vacuum pipe and fixed it by inserting a smaller pipe inside it. Didn't take too long to find after taking random things off.
