valve clearances

Post by ThatGuy »

I've been rebuilding my carb over the last few day and finally got running nicely and have good throttle response.
While I had the carb off I thought "oh why not do the valve clearances while the carbs off"
They've been sounding shit ever since I've had the car and tried doing them plenty of times to try make them quieter.
And I can finally say, I fucking hate them. Every time I try and gap them right I think they'll sound better and that I'm sorting them. Ofcorse not and now there louder than ever.
Anyone want to come over and sort them for me?
Rant over :)

Silly qurstion but are you using the right feeler guages? I did mine and got the imperial confused with the metric. Sounded like a tractor

Make sure the engine is stone cold when you do them. Are you sure you are not confusing the exhaust valves with the inlet ones?

To be honest what bothouse you have said could be a possibility, I can easily make mistakes like that :p
What side would be classed as what? Say the side with the lock nuts nearest to the inlet, are they the inlet ones? or would it be the side with the spring nearest the inlet be the inlet side?
Either way I was doing it stone cold and usually it helps a little but this time It didnt at all
Any input is greatly appreciated guys

The think is I have been 100% on what to do before and still got it miles out. I'm gunna try again thus weekend but I wouldn't be surprised If it still goes wrong like the other 400 times I've tried to do it

Not being funny, but you are making sure you`ve got the cam pointing upwards when you set the gap? And thee feeler goes between the cam and the pad on the follower, not the valve end? It`s hard to imagine what you`re doing wrong. The cam lobes aren`t worn or anthing are they?
Also, you`re not mixing metric/imperial units? Sorry if I sound patronising.

Nah by all means Stevemarl, each time I've done it the cam has been at the top, I've been using the right feeler gauges and I Measure it on when the cam makes contact with thepad underneath it. but every time I fire the engine after its just really loud and tappety. From what I remember the cam didn't look worn when I last did it, but it is a possibility. I'll doubt check everthink next time I do it and if the cam is worn it just means it's for a new cam kit :)
But once again cheers for everything

You know when you retighten the locknuts, you do recheck the clearances? I`ve fallen for that once, then again when I did it, the engine was super quiet and cut out when the engine reached 3k rpm.

Yes I do to make sure they haven't changed while I've tightened them up.
Well I'm giving it another go today so we'll see how it goes

4 hours? Glyn can change an engine in that time. In a field. Twice!

4 hours may have been an exaggeration, but either way I was taking my time just to make sure I'd done each one properly as I didn't really want to do it all over again
