Tyres for my laser...

Post by daisyduke »

Hi guys,

So i've just got my capri out of the garage early this year as the weather has been so nice – and my front two tyres would really benefit from being replaced, i've currently got Yokohamas on there, but have just been told that hardly anywhere is easily doing the size I need.

Any recommendations for my 1.6 Mark III laser? 13"... Cheers!

If you google search 185 70 13 tyres, you will find quite a few are around. Even michelin are making that size again.

A lot of places will order the standard Capri tyre for you. Be wary if you go wider on the fronts, the steering will become heavier.

I swear by my front tyres... they're budgets and I always shout "fuuuuck!" in the wet.

185/70 13 will be expensive because they're not usually stocked anymore. If you go for 175 they will be cheaper and fit fine.

Surely that's swearing *at* them? :p

I have Falkens at the moment, seem ok to me but have heard a few negative opinions on them since. They're 205s though as I have 7" and 8" wheels, might be a bit wide if you're running 6" ones. I have done it in the past, but as mentioned it makes the steering heavier. On the plus side they look damn cool.

I run Falken 185's on the front and they are pretty good.

Not worn too much with hard use, reasonable in the wet and dry and didn't cost the earth.

Tyres depend on the use, if you don't really go out in the wet then it's not such an issue.

Wouldn't think twice about taking the car out in the wet with the falkens and would be confident the car would be fine.

All the best.

With the price of some tyres, and if the rear tyres ain't far off needing replacement. it's just as cheap to get 4 alloys with tyres allready on from MWS. An all you have to do is bolt them on... Even a girl an do it. Just an idea.

I had falkens before my michelins and they were ok till they were half worn then they were lethal in the wet. Ive got 20000 miles on my mitchies and they are about half way. Yea they are £80 odd pound a tyre but worth it in my opinion.

I have 4 x Toyo TEO Plus TYTE +A 185/70 R13 H (86) on my Blue laser and 2 on the back on our red one.

I ran budgets and have to say these run in the wet like the budgets do in the dry. If getting it sideways is important to you don't by them but if grip and handling is I think they are good.

I have Yoko's on the 2.8 and the Caterham and I rate them very highly.

From my experience (been through tonnes of tyres lol)
Toyo are brilliant
Strada are shit hot
but the best so far which I can hand on heart swear by are some old second hand barum brilliant tyres.
Theyre the fattest 185's I've had on by far (I know weird right) and seriously dont ever let go in wet or shine.
I had one spare with 5 mil of tread and scored a second on fleabay with the same tread wear and year as mine for £15. Talk about a decent deal.

Dont ever buy courier sports..... just dont ever. I took mine off at 6mil of tread for favour of the barum's and I'd not even sell them on. Lethal buggers in wet, shine and even slide under the softest breaking.

I would say very, very difficult if not impossible? They have a steel bead round the inner edge which requires the sort of muscles I just don`t have. You`d need biceps on your fingers if you know what I mean?
Plus, you need them balanced.
