2.8i John Player Special

Post by gilley576 »

Just been informed by someone that his mate used to have a black 2.8i JPS........

Now usually I would have said "No they didn't, and if they told you they did they were talking shite!"

However this person happened to be a police officer, who had pulled me over, in the middle of a town, with my wife waiting in the cold to be picked up, just so he could "Admire" my car.

I just nodded and said "Christ! They're rare as rocking horse shit nowadays!"

His reply was legendary, for a police officer - "So how far do you reckon you could smoke your tyres? Don't worry, these guys (Talking about the other 20 police officers around) won't say anything, I'm their boss."

So not wanting upset a police officer, I lifted the rev's, dropped the clutch, and pressed gently on the brake and left in a plume of smoke...... Then had to spin around at the roundabout to drive past him..... so I flicked my flames on just to give him a treat :D

Damn I love having a car with so much charisma!

It was 0230, and I wasn't in the mood to educate him.......

It's like the people that say "Way back when, I had a 3 litre injection laser"

Nooooooo ya didn't, I bet you've never had a Capri, or a 1.6 L at best!

"Yeah this is the 2.8i Special"

"Ohhhh yeah, years ago I had a 3.0 injection, Super Special S Ghia Laser! I remember having to put slabs in the boot!"

1) This is not a pissing contest.
2) I have this now, and you have a KA
3) If you had to put slabs in the boot, you sure as hell couldn't drive!

I cannot count on hand and feet the amount of times people have had, what I call, cardboard Cars.

"I had a 2.0 tickford......"
"My cousin had a 2.5......"
"I used to own a stunning gold injection Ghia....."
"I had a 1.8i...."

And the one that got me was,

"I used to have the 2.8 injection RS version, the 4 wheel drive was worth the extra I paid...."

Most recently, I've heard someone say that they had a 3.3 Capri.
And someone else saying they had a Capri which would have been a former police car.
Think almost everyone put concrete, slabs, girders, bricks in the boot or replaced the spare wheel with poured concrete.
Strange that, the 1.6 was the most popular Capri engine, with it counting for almost a quarter of all cars sold, yet no one back then had one.

It's great though that the Capri is the stuff of folklore and legend.

There was a 3.2, the broadspeed, and I very nearly bought a Capri police car, just before I bought mine, but I thought, it's not exactly an everyday car lol

If it was the Greater Manchester Police one which cropped up on ebay, then I saw that too. And I believe the buyer sold it on at a profit, I saw it again at the Tatton Park car show last year. What I meant though, is someone that had a Capri back in the day, which, for some reason, was a 'former police car', because it was so quick and it had concrete in the boot which 'the police used to put in'.

Still, where are all the people who owned a 1.6 Capri, back in the day?!

I think the codeword for 1.6 was "2.8 Ghia".

I'm sure I've heard somewhere, maybe on here, of someone overhearing a conversation including the line

"Yeah Ford made a special concrete lump, that would fit perfectly in the spare wheel well."

You can see the shit filling up behind the eyes of these people as they speak to you!

I thought I'd seen it on here.

I do enjoy the occasional bullshit that goes with the cars.

I shot someone down at a show once, I was parked up next to a scimiter, and overheard a guy saying, "I used to have one of these, the 3.0, but the wings and roof rusted through so I scrapped it"

I then pissed myself, and when his mate asked what was so funny, I replied with

"It must have been a one off, pretty rare, maybe the only one which the body wasn't made from fibreglass!"

Needless to say he then turned to the guy and ripped into him for a good 5 mins!

I've been looking out for one of those! They don't seem to crop up often. Steve, thank you, will keep an eye on that.

Another annoying thing is being born in 87 and when the 'ahem' "older" generation talk about the 3.0 turbo injection ghia s they had with concrete in spare wheel well, and I waste my breathe by trying to correct them I get told in not so few words that I'm not old enough to know about capris...bollocks. Probably know more bout capris than any of them put together. My dad brought me home from hospital in a capri and he had more than one at any given time right up until he passed. My brothers had capris and carried my dads one one for a few yeas after. Not only are they my favorite realistic car but they have also been a hobby since I could drive.

Yeah I know that feeling,

"What do you know? I've been more miles in reverse that you have"

That may be so, but I'm a mechanic, I've also done a defensive and offensive driving course and I've stripped my car apart just for shits and giggles!
When I tell you that driving like that is gonna screw your car up.... It's gonna screw your car up!

Holding the car on a hill with the clutch...... Ohhhhh you like just burning it away do you?
