I've just spoken to our work mechanics apprentice, he's only bloody building one of the cars that's going around the track! He insisted his shell was in pretty bad nick, though his mate got a good decent shell with no engine for £200.

Keep an eye out for my old zetec shell going round! Sold it far too cheap but needs must and all that, wouldnt have been viable by the time i'd robbed everything i needed off it

I still cry a little inside to think about it. My mate said he ran his car (mk2 capri) with mint chrome front and rear bumpers on. :(

I was a banger racer, if you need any parts go to a meeting and ask most drivers will let you have parts for next to nothing or even swap yours bits for theirs. At the end of the day they pay for the cars its up to them what they do with them. Most are now bought on Ebay so it an auction for all to bid in future dont moan about who buys them bid more then you can do what you want with then. Ive always had classic Fords ive got a 100e and Capri. I agree there are some that should not get raced but thats life !!! A few years ago i put a Cortina MK4 on Ebay for £150 start price had no bids after 2 attempts, got offered £250 from a banger boy i took of loads of bits for myself then got slagged of for selling it to him. Anyone that moans put your money where your mouth is.

Main reason mine got raced I'd swiped so many bits it would have needed a full donor car to put it back on the road, and you're gonna want to find a better car for bits so would never happen
Went with crap doors bonnet and tailgate so them alone would cost a chunk of a restored cars value

Was amazed to see that Daytona yellow one on eBay only made £1200 last week should have brought it!

let me just make a point here
unless i woke up on the wrong side of bed tripped over the dog and landed face first in a bowl of cereal which caused me to miss something
why the bloody hell cant they race mk4 fiestas or an good Audi r8 ha
anything modern is better than a rusted classic
there are surely cheaper modern scrappers worth the bangers
i don't care if someone buys a car with their money some don't have the brains to realize what to do with it anyway let alone an informed decision about a car
this should be a warning to all selling their Capri now
i made a life oath no matter how many Capri i own i shalt not ever sell not one for rust or shine for this very reason
it wont be long before they start using concurs models mark my words
there should be laws here people lawzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

because due to our of date banger rules you can't race fuel injected cars. And it would be boring anyway as the fuel cut off switch would be activated on ever car after the first two laps.

What did I say about capris having no strength at the arse end. This is why I never raced one ever. Putting a three litre Capri in the unlimited bangers is total suicide.

my mate found out about this from a guy entering, I live relatively locally, was thinking of popping down. he said he knows a few of the shells are only still capri shaped beause they've had swathes of old scaffold pipe welded into them.

the vast majority of what they drive is nowhere near economically viable for restoration. of course not all racers are the same, some have more money than sense and will hoss round in something perfectly good. one guy apparently spent a grand on a paintjob for his banger :wank:

ive also now got a line on a huge unit full of bits :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

You could well be right there. Before long the classic cars 'suitable' for banger racing will dry up, then the next level of cars will be taken, the daily runners or whatever.

Yeah the conversion of injected to a shitty old carburettor is much easier than prepping old shells for impact protection like modern cars are already equipped with
I know I’m digging deep into this thread I’m awfully passionate about old cars. And willing to stick up for what I believe is right.
Those that banger actual fooked shells that won’t ever drive again fair enough, but that’s borderline at best.
Those that leave decent parts on, windows bumpers, rare parts etc .. Well such descriptions I shouldn’t place on a decent community forum.
There seriously isnt an argument that can validate the trashing of classics end of really.
im so glad i dont live close to banger racer enthusiasts or id probably make the decent classic cars dissappear and donate them anonymously with diff vin plates to those that have always wanted the delight of driving a dream

Are you seriously saying that modern cars (70% plastic now) are in any way capable of replacing classic bangers. You're way off. I've had friends that lived and breathed unlimited bangers, I raced a few times myself, westys, A60s. A few granny's (no jokes please) and a jag mk2 8-) Now are you seriously saying that a modern car with crumple zones it ever gona compete with that. I would be very thankfull that the only place a capri was anywhere close to being a good banger is rookie 1600s as they go up against bluebirds and premeras. If the capri ever a made a good banger you'd see a hell of a lot less of them around now by a significant amount. Stop worrying about it and get over it. Oh and by the way. The mk2 escort 4 door made a better banger than the capri by a long long way. I ragged one at prestwood in 1994 and it simply refused to die even after several roll overs I'd be thankfull that the capri makes a crap banger and the guys that race the unlimiteds won't touch one.

Oh and if the shells were re enforced they should have been disqualified. You're allowed one acro and a drivers door plate. That's only for driver protection. Sounds like foul play to me if scaffold bars were being threaded up the sills and hidden.
