Where abouts Tom? I've been looking for what places still do this, and the nearest I could find was in Brentwood in Essex. Wouldn't mind a tank full of the stuff for this year.

If you were here in person I would tell you in a song. No reason, I just would.

Take the A10 to Royston, take a right at the roundabout down the A505.. it's a Shell garage about six miles down the road.

I accidentally put £5 too much in.. whoops.. heading down there again now to make up the difference.

Yep same where I used to work.

Even before it was officially 'phased out' 4 star was old super unleaded (stuff that was withdrawn due to high benzene content in the early 90's) with a high percentage of benzene taken out and resold as 4 star. This was back in 1996. Seem to remember sometimes petrol did seem better than other times around then - my guess is there was a bit of experimentation as to what to use instead of Benzene. (Which I'm told is what was in fuel pre 1950's and was replaced with lead anyway!?)

Whatever the outcome, it is likley much of the later day 4 star was the same stuff as what became LRP (although health and saftey wouldn't know for sure - hence the change) - bet half of it just was excuse to charge more to those who 'pollute more'.

Be interesting to know if the car ran any different Tom?

LRP is no good, I'd rather put unleaded in and add valvemaster.

I'll check, but as far as I know, LRP is LRP, sometimes called 4-Star LRP, and 4-star is four star.

I sincerely doubt its legal to sell something called 4-Star when it's actually 4-Star LRP.

I'll find out though, tis a good point.

"However, leaded motor fuel re-entered the UK market in small quantities from 2000 in response to lobbying from classic-car organisations who contended their vehicles would be rendered useless without leaded fuel. The lead content is up to 0.15 grams per litre, and Bayford & Co are the only wholesale supplier.[10]"

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraethy ... ut_and_ban

So leaded fuel is definitely for sale, and this outlet is almost certainly proper 4-Star, as it's not labelled 4-Star LRP... which is different stuff.

What, the A12? A stretch of road that looks like my 3 year old designed a built in an afternoon.

Ah, I suppose your a Cambs guy, so the M11 is your gateway to Essex. Agreed then, nice roads all the way if you go that way. I'll let you know if I go.

No the A505 where the petrol station is. Good length of road.. couple of roundabouts to keep things interesting.. there's even a tunnel and some hills!

Not when you compare it to good old TEL it isn't.

Valvemaster also seems to carbon up the head a bit.. I followed Glyn's advice and now only put half the amount in.. and even then only every third fill. Checked my exhaust valve clearances the other day and they're perfect.

I've always steered clear of additives, but the whole bio-ethanol in fuel eating my engine from the inside out thing scared me, so was using Miller VSPEXXX2000+ Super Power, or whatever it is called. Can runs nice on it, haven't done any further inspection to see what effect it is having though.

From what I know (which isn't much), it looks like this stuff:
http://tetraboost.com/

is the answer to all our problems.
- Real TEL additive to make up proper petrol from unleaded
- Funky additive to deal with ethanol

Only bummer is its £140 for a box of six 900ml bottles, which at the dosage they list (100ml for 11 litres) is about 2 tanks per bottle. So its about £10 per fill-up.

But I bets it's good if you mix it with super unleaded!

Haha, yea!

Price wise that's actually not too bad when you compare it to similar strength octane boosters. They’re all f’in expensive. I’ve used Millers CVL Turbo in the past, and that’s about £10+ a bottle.

You could always try getting friendly with your local airfield :)
