"The advisory period will also cease and any vehicle or trailer failing to meet the required standards will be failed"

So they expect every vehicle to pass without advisories?

Sounds like it. But that's how it always used to be anyway isn't it.

I suppose a lot of people ignore the advisories and let them get bad enough to be dangerous. It's a shame so many people are stupid

i can actually see alot of people coming off the road as tax will rise so will fuel and the mot's are more strict i think to be honest in this day in age unless your wearing croccodile skin shoes and a rolex you will be seeing your car in your garden growing the amazon rain forest trees through your car body.

How will they check that, on a Capri? I know the handbrake light doubles up as that but I don't know how they would check it.

You worried me with the speedo thing, I know mine reads wrong but I don't pay any attention to it TBH. I've got an app on my phone that gives me a GPS based speedo which will be a lot more accurate than the cable driven type on cars anyway.

Reading the linked article though it looks like the new changes only "affect vans, heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches" unless I'm reading it wrong.

I can't imagine there will be an accuracy test on the speedo, just more of a "does it work or not". Speedos are allowed to over read, and do so from factory, however I believe they break the law if they read under the actual vehicle speed.

As for phone gps speedo apps, I wouldn't trust them. According to some I've used, I can walk 70mph!

I always thought that you were allowed a 10% fluctuation on the speedo.

The spedo is allowed to under read but cannot over read.

I think the test will be does it work yes/no.

if it is an accuracy test then there will be loads of cars that fail and it will be a complete pain to sort it out.

I think you mean the other way around. If a speedo under read by 10%, then when your speedo read 30mph, you would be doing 33mph. Over reading is good because you are going slower than you think.

Assuming this is only to be applied to vans, heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches i.e. commercial vehicles that are also governed by drivers tacho rules etc. I wouldn't be surprised if they did test the accuracy of the speedo.

Either way, on that assumption we don't have to worry as it won't affect Capri's. Unless you've done a van conversion on yours of course :D

Also, reading (between the lines) on this it sounds like all these changes have been in since Jan 2012 but would only have been advisories so if you haven't had an advisory for the any of the new rules, you shouldn't fail for one of them next time round.

when i go a ride in mine and i hit one of them digital signs with the speed on it and its 30mph zone it flashes and says slow down 30 mph im dead on 30 mph on my speedo but on the digi reader sign it says im doing 33 mph so what i do is i do is slow down to 27mph then it flashes 30 mph and says thankyou but when i drive my vectra through the same camera at 30 mph on my speedo it says thankyou must be that the modern cars speedos are accurate

Speedo is actually checked for illumination, and if its not lit it fails, theres no acual test of its operation

Just read it and It doesn't mention cars just vans, lorries etc Not a word about cars
So in theory we should be safe.

They also state that as vehicle tech changes the MOT should to reflect it.
However as our capris NEVER had such tech If we don't fit it it cannot be tested.

The other bits if your unsure I'd get friendly with you garage (I know most of the staff at the one I go to by 1st name)

My handbrake warning light doesn't work partly because it removed the switch and wiring as It was very rusted- Has never failed doubt it will.

That's good advice that is. Also, some stations are more sympathetic towards older cars, there is one near me which even advertises as such.
