Finally have a Capri! Now where to start???
Finally brought a capri! 1987 laser 1.6 in matt black.
As a 24 year old woman I dont have much of a mechanical background but Im willing to learn.
Does anyone know of any meets/days out where I could possibly pick up some much needed tips on maintinence and upgrades?
Thanks
Jazz

I'd suggest you find the CapriPower forum and ask to speak to Francis Ellingworth. He is in your area. He does use this forum too, but I think he's on the other one more often.
He will definitely be able to help you out.

Hi Jazz, good the hear you've finally found one.
There's a meet at my house on sunday, full strip-down and service
Otherwise you can get any tips about maintenance on here as you need them (when the weather improves.)
Run it for a while to get a feel for how it goes then do one thing at a time & check for improvement. Decent tyres at the right pressures is a good start.
Next is probably check brake linings for wear & bleed out any air.
Next will be stopping the rust

A good way off but there is the annual Laser page camping weekend near Bedford in July. A lot of knowledgeable types will be there! Keep your eyes peeled on here for details.

Hi welcome to the forum. Having stated that you're a) 24 and b) female, I am absolutely certain that you will be inundated with offers of mechanical assistance, bodywork tips and free servicing from our many chivalrous and experienced members. Being car enthusiasts, some of us wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity of talking to girls.

Apart from the basic already said stuff.
I'd advice you simply drive it and then start to look at what you dislike about it
And then look at the best way (for yourself) on how to deal with it.
Then get some advice from here and IF possible try to test drive the advice give before you spend your money.
However If I was to get another Capri 1.6 tomorrow....
Dump the front brakes for the 2.8I set-up with braided hoses.
145Lbs spring on a -1 inch drop.
2.8I ARB front and rear.
Full bush replacement with polyurethane (think that is the spelling) ones.
Ditch the VV carb for Weber ICH34 Or go better to the 32/36 DGV jetted to suit.
K&N air filter to suit the chosen carb.
4 branch Exhaust manifold and matching system.
Electronic Ignition system.
Front Strut brace.
New tyres pending what wheels I choose.
And that list would be just for starters.
Bottom line just enjoy it and do what you feel needs doing.

Where to start? Drive drive drive until you pass out or run out of fuel
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

This year will be a huge learning curve for me and I'm after all the help I can get. I'm not only a Capri lover but fascinated by mechanics!mjcapri wrote:Hi welcome to the forum. You wouldn't happen to know a good site for spares would you? Trying to find some window seals is proving a pain!
