Re: OILS
Asda mineral oil at eight quid a gallon, change it every six months & it'll keep the insides clean and sweet. Better than paying twenty five quid for posh stuff and then leaving it in for three years to get your money's worth!

Re: OILS
Nige means ASDA own mineral engine oil, cooking oil would do nothing for you engine except be burnt.
Our engines dont need anything synthetic, a regularly changed cheap oil will do more than an expensive oil changed to modern car standards.
I change the oil in my 2.8 granada every 3000 miles and use £15 a gallon morris classic golden film 20W50 oil.
My 2.1 capri gets millers motorsport oil at 15W60 changed every 3000miles but only does about 3000 miles a year anyway. Thats because with the state opf tune it was recomended by multiple people with experience in high performace pintos.
The granada dose maybe 6-9k a year and will be changed roughly every 3k miles to stop the oil thickening and clogging any galleries or rocker feeds.

Re: OILS
I broke my 2.1 in with just 10W40 mineral oil.
Synthetic wont allow proper break in of the engine.
The engine builders i spoke to said a basic mineral oil will be fine for breaking an engine in. You could use a running in oil but your choice.
as long as you follow the running in procedure of varying RPM while driving but never exceeding 4000RPM for the first 1000 miles. Then drive it like you stole it.

Re: OILS
I go for cheap and cheerful 20w50 mineral oil. Used to be a tenner for five litres, though it's now £15 in my local cheap-o-warehouse, that's inflation for you!
I have to say though, I run the stuff in my daily driver (mk2 fiesta), and it definately didn't like cold mornings starting up. I was given a £20 halfords voucher for birthday, so tried some of that ZX1 engine "magic bean" additive. It has made no difference to power, mpg, etc... though it does turn over noticeably easier on a cold morning.
10w40 won't hurt your engine, but don't go for 5w30 (which all fords now take, and so most people will recommend for a ford), it's just too thin to climb up the oil ways and properly lubricate the top end.
