Colin, got a mjl q for you....

Post by Supercharged Nat »

Can the 'serial to usb' adapter/lead be connected to the mjl unit while driving the car? ie leaving the lead in place but not having the laptop connected.

will it be ok or will the chip in the conversion lead confuse the mjl if its left connected to the mjl while the laptop isnt connected?

does that make sense?

any thoughts id be greatful.Image

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

Yo,

Although I'm not Colin :) I'm gonna say it will be fine.

RS232 doesn't have a concept of state. It just streams bits in both directions at a speed determined by clients at both ends. Therefore if the MJ isn't receiving any data, which it won't be without a computer, it won't even know there is anything plugged in.

Also the USB to Serial controller chip gets its power from the USB bus, and without a USB controller in a computer to power it, it will be completely inactive.
