Good reading Tom, keep up the good work.
I really like the cat wall paper, would look excellent on a shirt.

Very nice Tom
Those test cells look VERY different to the modern ones we have here.
Although our own test cell 3 used for Rolls Royce Olympus 593 (concorde variant), JT9-D, RB211 -22b (Tristar) -D4 (747) and -535C (757) looks similar in some repects.
I have seen an RB211 -22b installed in a test cell there, I had to go there once to witness a test for correlation purposes. Basically we ran it there and took a bunch of readings, then ran it here and took them again to see if they were the same, thus proving both test cells were properly calibrated. I dod remember that their cell was a hell of a lot louder than ours, but then again ours is surrounded by 5 feet of concrete and 3 foot thick steel doors.Efi Pinto's rock!!!

Thanks..
..for your comments.
Yeah it's like something Ridley Scott would chose for a film set, but with more pipes and rust.
Dave, I will get those shots of the fires station for you mate, no worries

Sounds interesting..
..could you get any pictures of the new cells?
Also Sam, do you have any idea how they test the engines for bird strike durability?

Thanks Tom,
I go on holiday for a fortnight on Saturday but when I get back, I'll find out how they tested for birdability...
Will text you when I get back to sort you out somewhere to stay when you come back down here next.MUCH BETTER TO BURN OUT THAN just fade away.....

yeah, frozen chickens...
Honestly! We don't do it here but I have seen it done on our outdoor test cells in Peebles, Ohio.
We have a compressed air cannon on the ground loaded with a frozen chicken (defrosted of course), the engine gets started and run up to takeoff thrust (absolute maximum) and the cannon is fired, and the reults captured on a super slow motion camera. Played back you can see the bird get chopped up, see the fancase become oval for a moment, see the blades deflect then see it all settle down and just keep on going. It's really impressive. What follows is weeks of detail inspections on every part of the engine.
What's more impressive is a blade-out test. The engine is run up as for the bird-strike test and a small explosive charge blows off one of the fan blades. Most recently done with the GE90 (777) engine and the GenX (development engine for the new 787 dreamliner aircraft)
I don't have any footage but i'm sure searching certain internet sites might prove fruitful.Efi Pinto's rock!!!

Very awesome Tom...
I think I would have crapped myself in some of those places you went into, especially the flooded basement area.
I heard about the frozen chicken testing on plane canopies. Whether true or not, I heard the canopy designers were stumped when the testers kept telling them their designs were failing. I took a few attempts before someone actually said "are you defrosting the chickens before you fire them?" and the the penny dropped.
