Decisions, decisions...

Post by -JC- »

I can finally afford to spend a bit on my car but not sure what to spend on. I'm thinking either:

1] Sort out my laser. suspension and a bit of bodywork, manual gearbox, injection head, exhaust and manifold, cam 1.6 axle, maybe bike carbs and megajolt.

2] Sort out my laser. suspension and a bit of bodywork, manual gearbox, stick on a t3 turbo and manifold I've spotted for sale. Probably too difficult for me to do myself I'm guessing, so maybe a bad idea!

3] Buy a 2.0 with all the work in 1] already done - probably cheaper and easier, but I know the history of mine, it's fairly low mileage, and there's the sentimental value.

4] Buy a 3.0 - More expensive but more power as standard and v6 noise :D

Any thoughts or opinions?

ps: it's taken me about three hours to type (and re-type) this cos of my crappy internet connection today, so apologies for any bad spelling etc

I've always wanted a 3.0 so I should say #4 but I've had this Capri coming up 8 years now so I know what you mean with the sentimental and history bit so I've probably got to agree with Rich (until I get my beer off him anyway  )

Buy the 3.0 and keep the laser that way you have 2 to play with

sort of No4 but a 2.8 as they as it will be easier to find a good one, and if engine stuff goes on the 3.0 it is harder to find, but don't wast money on a laser unless it you modify it eg 2.9 decent interior etc.

Hmmm, so 1 seems to be most popular, i'm surprised nobody thought it sensible to go for 3, but also kinda glad cos I don't especially want to do that even if it seems more sensible.

The 2.8 has never really appealed to me, (and injection on the whole), so the only option there that I'd be happy with would be a carbed version, but that seems a lot of work for a similar result to a 3.0. I'm not interested in restoring my laser or keeping it standard really, a nicer interior is on the list also, found some nice aftermarket recaros for sale almost new that I'm gonna try and get hold of.

Oh yeah that's a point - insurance! I better check out how much it will affect my premiums!

Oh and if anyone else was interested in the turbo and manifold, here's the link:

Had a mate who bought a 2.0i Sierra (write-off) purely to use the 5-speed box on his 2.0GL Capri.
After a look over it we swapped the entire Injected engine and box, plus 2.8i fuel tank, 2.8i suspension etc.
He had the engine lightened and balanced etc whilst it was out.
At the end he rolling roaded it and had 130 bhp.
That's only 8 less than a 3.0 when it's new! Plus only half the weight!
Apart from the sound effects it was a no-brainer really!

only thing I'd say is build it yourself, dont buy one thats done, pintos are good, but you cant beat the sound and grunt of a V6
