Pics of the days work...

Post by rich_jc »

Ive finally started actually putting things back together.

Nothing too taxing, though ive never actually done a cover plate before.

I used the hylomar stuff on both sides of the gasket, and also as a thread sealant for the bolts (cheers andy). Its good stuff.

That big blob on the cover is a MIG repair to a hole there was. I know it isn't pretty, but it was free. The Mrs doesn't like it, but I refuse to pay £50 for a new one.

You cant see the repair anyway now its all hammerited.

Now just to fit the axle tomorrow and the car will be back on four wheels again!

Hylomar....

Is a superb product Rich. I use it on big (10 litre!) diesel engines, in a vain attempt to stop the oil escaping lol. The only mistake some people make is trying to use it in conjunction with a rubber seal/gasket. It doesn't work on them!
Rolls Royce recommend it too, which can only be a good thing.

ite - a little tip, even on a shot-blasted axle with numerous coats of hammerite paint the rust still came through after a year or so on two jobs I've done. If you still have the old oil from the diff use it to paint the axle when it's fitted, if not give it a coat of wax sealer or similar to keep it sound, it's depressing when you spent time & money only to see it go brown.

To be fair...

I didn't shot blast it, just gave it a good going over with a wire brush.

Thanks for the old oil tip, ill bear that one in mind. At least I chose a dark colour so it wont look so bad when it turns.

Rolls Royce...

Post by rich_jc »

The old boy at my local ford place told me when they used to order in Hylomar from ford, it came with the rolls royce logo on it.

Ive heard it doesn't work on rubber gaskets though. We both agreed that if Ford made it properly though, you shouldn't need to use hylomar. Maybe a circular threaded diff cover that screws into the casing, like a giant plug?
